Its a Crow Conversion

Namaste, thought I'd share a few thoughts as a friendly observer:

Crow or "Javier" and this Dave seller are two different individuals. While I'm somewhat familiar with Crow and some of his builds & their mechanical history from SMB Forum and here on expo, this is a different seller.

Dave has the vehicle converted South of the border, where there are a few Baja 500 / Baja 1000 shops that will do conversions in the off race season. He then sells from Cardiff in SoCal for profit...I've spoken with Dave over the phone a few different times, he's a straight shooter, honest, van/Baja 1000 enthusiast.... just a community college guidance councilor who upfits class B's/ vans / the occasional motorhome and is selling for a profit. No problems there. A unique niche to help out the Baja beach driver or ski bum like myself.

I believe Crow and Dave may use the same shop that build bumpers and perhaps even conversion shops... and while I've never purchased a vehicle from either seller, perhaps both sellers and each "new" vehicle at least deserve a first unbiased evaluation, now, in 2020 or whenever they come on the market in the future, regardless of other builds we read about from years ago.

I like to think he's truthful... Dave's said: he monitors what the shop is doing, inspecting the conversion throughout the process, doing quality control where possible, runs the vehicle for a couple months ensuring everything's working correctly, listing it for sale and then inviting potential buyers to take it to any mechanic before buying. And finally, standing behind the vehicle he sells... If there's a problem down the road, he's available to explore options.

As we all know, 4x4 conversions are cool and facilitate awesome, memorable experiences. My 2 cents in reply, on maybe quick assumptions or a jump to a conclusion. Thought I'd comment as my past experiences with Dave were positive, and think he deserves a fair shake, as well as promote the sale of cool vehicles in the overland community. ?

Stone I can appreciate your feedback. Perhaps Dave has different standards or QC . Javier and Dave seem to both be using Halcon Racing to do the conversions. Do they build crap for one guy and not the other? We are a semi tight community on Expo looking out for each other. Dave is welcome to join the community and change our minds. He sounds like he has a passion and would fit right in.

I am a welder and a fabricator and have seen Crow/Halcon work first hand. Some of the failures of their work could have resulted in death. I am all about somebody finding cool rigs to convert and make a few bucks. San Diego is full of quality builders who have a proven track record. no need to cross the border and have questionable work completed.

When I first found this ad, I reached out to seller and asked where was conversion done? His response was that the work was done in a friend's off-road shop.
I then asked if it was a Javier/Crow conversion? His response was no.
As a potential buyer, I would want to know where the conversion was done. I would think it could impede sale if seller doesn't want to release that information.

Cummins & Zip - Both solid points... I too would want to know where the conversion was done and additional details. Chris Steuber undoubtedly knows his stuff, the volume of conversions his shop has done and his input is invaluable. You're right, Dave's QC or standards could be different than Crow's, but if they're using the same shop, that's certainly cause for concern. Each vehicle is a buyer beware in it's own way.

Likely the same shop - MSD appears to have some good insight -

All Javier/crows van are built in Tijuana by Halcon racing, others who have started using them as well is San Diego based McNeil racing this guy who just joined to market this van (Dave Clark). Anything built by Halcon for anyone either Javier Crows, Mcneil or others should be avoid... Biggest issue with these are the welds and geometry. This guy is a flipper (which is fine) but buyers that know the rep of the 4x4 conversion will walk... All the vans he's sold have been Halcon (https://halconracing.com/services/) same bumers, racks, ladders and such... I'd steer clear due to safety issues.

I think my friend bought one of these Javier/Crow TJ conversions. The seller is in National City, demands cash. He did hand us the keys and said take her for a spin. The 7.3 ran like crap, the trans shifted weird and it had the worst bumpstop I've ever ever ridden in. It came with Load range D 37's which were way too soft for the weight. Paint job seemed fine and it had a huge rack and side stairs mounted. It has been a disaster for him. I suggested having it checked out by the shop I use but he declined.

Long time member here and have built and ran several rigs over the years. I recently discovered that Dave is literally my neighbor. Small world, I know... I’ve seen and put hands on this latest creation and for my $.02 it seems to be of a higher build standard. It’s been parked in a few spots near me and I’ve even crawled under it. Seems to be a quality uptick from one even two years ago (a BT cruiser) conversion. If anyone can’t get the traction with the seller, I’m happy to send you pics Etc when time permits. I can see the damn thing from my living room lol. pM me.
