1996-2004 Land Rovers - Which would be best to buy for 16 yo Daughter?

My first rover was a Freelander. Bought when I was 21, had it till I was 25 then moved to the Discovery 3.

Was actually a decent car, he issues I had were down to a "specialist" being an ******** hole and lying to me over work.

Comfy to drive, decent on fuel and had plenty of toys, handled really well and with decent tyres, I got it further round an off road site then the Classic and 90 brigade, which pisses them off properly. :sombrero:

First one got rear ended by a skirt doing semi truck on ice, I walked away without a scratch.
Simple enough to sort and any issues are well known about so easy to check up on.

I've recommended them to a few people.

Was it a diesel though? I think that is the major distinction between your market Frisbee's and the NAS time bombs...yours apparently were decent for what they were, ours were not at all!

Have looked at a couple of 2000 Nissan Xterras today. Look pretty reasonable with high miles and in the 3-4k price range. Any thoughts on their reliability?

I had a 2000 Frontier then a 2002 X-Terra. They were 100% reliable and preformed flawlessly. Only got rid of them because I needed better fuel economy (traded the X-Terra in on a Jetta TDI) and more towing capacity (traded the Frontier in on a F-150). The V-6 puts out a ton of TQ and the interiors were simple and easy to clean. Great for going to the beach.

Yes. Had to bin the EGR valve, change the boost hoses to silicone ones and keep the crankcase filter changed every service.

What's wrong with the v6 models?

Lol no kidding. Put her in a Camry if she needs awd put her in a Legacy.

Come on, no need to be cruel. A Camry? Anything but a Camry!

But I agree with the sentiment. As I said earlier an SUV is really a horrible means of transport and a complete waste unless you have a specific need for off road prowes. SUVs are terrible cars, so why not just do it right the first time and get an actual car? Cheaper, safer, easier to own and drive, better economy, etc...

Don't be afraid of first Gen Pathfinders.

They're dead nuts reliable, pretty cheap, and will go every where a D1 will go.

The only thing to watch with those is the timing chain service on the 3.3 V6. Its a huge pain in the *** apparently.

It's a belt on the VG motors & it's not THAT difficult.

I changed my first gen Pathfinders on the side of I-5 once. (Don't ask long story)

Engines and transmissions on Freelanders should be considered part of the 60k service. The motors have wet liners that are sealed to the bottom of the block which are prone to leaking coolant into the crank case. An oil change on a Freelander can very easily turn into a motor replacement.

Well A deposit was put on a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder, 190k miles, looks to be in great shape and in need of a good cleaning! My only concern is after doing more web "research" there appears to be an issue with transmission fluid getting into the radiator and causing severe damage, but looks to be mainly on 2005-2007, but I imagine could be 2004 as well. Hopefully since the high mileage this defect has been rectified???

Also known as the strawberry milkshake of death (smod). I don't believe it was an issue at all with that gen Pathfinder. Only with the next generation with the VQ40 engine which is why you say 2005-2007. It was an issue with the same generation Xterra but isn't nearly as common as people make it seem even then. I could be mistaken but I don't think you have anything to worry about.
