I am looking at replacing my steering gear and can only find cardone rebuilds locally. My past experience with the cardone is poor so I am looking for alternatives. Are there any reputable rebuilders or sources? I don't want to spend a fortune but hate the thought of putting a box in worse than the one I have now. Any info is appreciated.

Are you aware that they can be adjusted? Have a friend turn the steering wheel jently back and forth as you loosen the lock not on the hex key adjuster on the steering box. Gently turn the hex key in untill you meet some resistance. Then back it off slightly. Then tighten the lock nut. The person in the vehicle must be moving the steering wheel back and forth as you make this adjustment. I hope this helps. Cheers, Chilli..:)

Redneck Ram out of Texas rebuilds steering boxes and they have a lot of info on their site to increase pressure in the pump for easier steering.
If you replace your steering box I would suggest doing the Cherokee intermediate shaft modification. I gets rid of the rag joint down at the steering box and generally snugs up the steering a bit too.
