1998, Master Cylinder Reservoir Float Failure, Brake Light Stuck On, Repair

Ok here goes. I am trying to repair the float in my brake master cylinder reservoir. At first I wasn't very hopeful but I have since changed my mind. The function is a simple magnet embedded into the bottom of the float. You never can see it unless you take it apart. The sensor must be embedded into the plastic of the reservoir beneath the float. To get the float out, I just squeezed the keeper clip on the guide post with tin snips, which bit the sides enough to just bend it and then it came right off. That was the only challenge / risk to the whole operation. With the clip removed, the float just lifts right out. I will be looking for another float from salvage, or I'll get a new master cylinder and steal the float out of it, and save the rest for when I need to replace the whole thing. I can float the new one in a cup of brake fluid side by side with the old one to make sure it sits higher in the fluid. I will add more to this thread later as I go on. The material is a hard plastic, I wonder if over the years it just finally became saturated enough with brake fluid to change the density a bit.

It solved the problem temporarily.....I have a more recent post about this ( I should have added to this one vs. starting a new thread), and this most recent problem was solved simply by sucking out the old brake fluid in the reservoir and refilling it. So I’m thinking two things matter here, #1 the condition of the float, and #2, good fresh fluid. On a separate note, probably a good idea to flush the brake lines anyway not just refresh the fluid in the reservoir. Check my newest post on this issue.
