1998 Mercedes Benz Actros Project - USA west coast

I guess I should start a build thread. I tried to buy this Actros from a truck broker who had it on the market in the fall of 2023. I was not able to get anywhere with the seller at the time. I spent most of the 2024 looking for trucks in Europe, including 6 weeks driving all over the place from Spain to Netherlands. I got to tour a few of the German conversion companies while I was there. This year I ended up buying two MAN trucks, and right before the 2nd MAN project got underway in May, this Actros came back on the market. It was was parked in Austria and based on odometer it hadn't been driven since 2023 very much. It appeared to be an Expedition Truck project that stalled out. A few days later I was wiring money to some guy in Austria and a truck picked it up on shortly after the funds cleared. I'm trying to sell the two MAN trucks that are both parked at Box Manufakur now if anyone wants a Euro Truck. I have one posted already.

The plan is to have it gone through in Germany mechanically, and a 5m-5.4m habitat installed by Box Manufakur before exporting to the USA. Trying to get it on a boat by end of September, 2025.

Truck Specs:

1998 Mercedes Actros 1831 (18,000kg / 310hp)
37,000Km currently
3900mm Wheelbase.
Medium cab size
Heavy duty planetary axles front and rear, with 4.143 gear ratios
Manual 16 speed double H gearbox - G 210-16/14.2-0.83
OM501 Engine - 12 liter V6 turbo / intercooled
18,000Kg chassis rating
Converting to 14R20 Super Singles using custom rear wheels.
Hydraulic rear mounted winch running off PTO
Rear and center differential lockers.
Hi/Lo transfer case.

Based on my calculations it will run about 1500RPM at 65mph and engine should produce 400hp and 2000nw (1500ft lbs) after a mild tune. I'm trying to decide on floor plan and final box length. I think about 5.2 is going to be ideal fit for chassis.

Wheelbase should be extended. Other folks are done with their MB firetruck builds and the rear overgang seems excessive.

Theses rigs require expensive tires. Mainly due to the GVW being overkill for a expedition rig. They were meant to carry huge water tanks.

I made a serious eval on this MB Firetruck in 2020 before I decided against it.

The overhang doesn't seem bad with the 5.2m box. Tires are Continental HCS, good for 5000kg.

3900mm wheelbase is fine. Going longer will bring additional issues with manoeuvrability.

The overhang in the diagram looks fine

I think it fits a 5.2m box pretty well. Also, the winch is packaged in there tightly, so I don't want to touch rear axle.

Looks perfect, well proportioned , it's the right way to go.

The suggestion the chassis needs to be longer is ill conceived

For parts and service work?
Yes. Took the truck to them when we first arrived in UK. First time that the truck got a good worker with people who work on these beasts all day.

Have gone back every year since for a "spa day."

Heading back now to take care of some rotting air lines and worn out bushings.

Great people.
