1998 Tacoma camper buildout

Hi All, thought you might like to see Rocinante, our little Tacoma camping rig. She's all DIY and taught us a lot about what we want in Rocinante 2.0, our new 2001 Tundra project.

Some of Rocinante's features:

  • Sleeping platform with storage drawer. Plenty of room for all our camping and climbing stuff.
  • DIY roof rack. Welded together some angle iron and bolted it down, using lots of RV sealant on the mounts.
  • Solar system. This was a cheap 45 watt system from Harbor Freight, primarily used for lights, fan, and charging phones and computers. I hooked it up to two 12v car batteries and never had an issue running out of power.
  • Velcro blackout curtains and screens for the sliding shell windows. Fast and easy to make, although not a great long term solution as they pull on your shell liner.

And some of the improvements we're looking forward to in 2.0:
  • Access cab with clamshell doors! No more wrestling the cooler out of the back seat of the Taco! I'm planning to ditch the back seat and build in an organizer.
  • Better access to the side hatches in the sleeping platform, which were effectively useless under the mattress in the skinnier Taco bed.
  • Exterior lighting, for easier tailgate cooking and nighttime camp hangout.
