Giggle........CP's are one of those things that makes me giggle.....This is the last one I worked out of. It was a multi hundreds of thousands of dollars bus that could talk with the space shuttle or president if necessary but, it never went outside if it was raining, only it's staff could operate it, no SWAT operators were allowed inside due to they may damage or scratch something, you had to be trained/authorized to even access it, yada, yada, yada....Needless to say SWAT and Investigations had to work out the old Bluebird CP.....It did look cool on tv though...

Our mobil lab and CP are no different...lol. If you don't have a legitimate reason to be inside....get use to the parking lot...haha.

110% spot on here also. Our old CP (box van on the back of a chevy) while it could not go everywhere (2x4), it when down a zillion miles of log road, etc. Then '9/11 funds' bought a new 'motorhome CP' with the same 'necessary' links to the space shuttle or president (although only one person in the whole department could operate it). The bad thing for us is they got rid of the old 'Command Van', so then in 'the woods' all we had was a sheet of plywood in the back of an F350 ?

Many a successful ops got run on the trunklid of a Crown Vic, in the rain, at night, cold coffee, hungry, **************, bosses and brotherhood.....long before the million dollar buses showed up! Cheers.

Ok...let’s all agree that these may be silly agency vehicles, with varying degrees of usefulness, bought with funds appropriated from various government initiatives.

BUT, if some civilian wants to drive this up to the ski area parking lot on a snowy Friday night with the fridge loaded full of beer, and camp out for the weekend, are they going to have a good time?!

Not trying to sound insulting...but you do realize that its not an off road vehicle? It was never intended to be a rock crawler or mud buggy. It's not built to go "off the beaten path" and explore the distant resches of the planet.

4x4 for that kind of vehicle is for snow, ice, or in the case of the mobile lab that my agency owns, so it doesn't get stuck on wet grass when its parked at the fair grounds. Waiting for a tow truck or another vehicle to pull you out isn't always a practical or safe option.

Your graciousness knows no bounds, keep a wrinkle in it boss.

In my opinion....no.

$39,000 (ex-gov vehicle of unknown use and abuse)+ $20,000 (+/- tires, suspension upgrde, baselining engine/drive train for travel, new interior, de-mod, paint, widgets/gadgets, etc...) + 1-2 years buildout = +/- $60k to get it to the ski slope.......

There is number purpose built 4wd RV's or easily modded 2wd RV's out there for much less. Good luck!

Yeah... Our equiment exceeds anything that a crownvic could ever hope to hold up...lol.

In fact, we carry enough extra lead shielding that just that one item weighs more than a Crownvic...haha.

What's silly about them? They are purpose built, to an agencies specs, for a specific job. Every one that I have worked out of was well thought out and did everything that it was designed to do.

The mobile lab we just ordered will end up costing about 2 million dollars when all is said and done. While it might be useless as an expedition vehicle, camper, or off road toy... It will serve my agency for two+ decades and do exactly what we need, when we need it to do it.

Next year we are ordering a prep/support trailer for it. It will be about 200k and built to perform a specific job. It wouldn't make a good travel trailer or toy hauler, but for prepping radiological samples for analysis it will be great.

The problem with those is the camper/box portion are laughably weak. Usually a command center type vehicle is built to a much higher standard. EVI builds ours and they are ridiculously strong.

Agree....Like Ambulances, they're built for impact, roll over and weather protection of the occupants, yet that strength comes with the penalty of gross weight. Even on this F450 chassis, this one (and others like it) simply would not be pleasant to own and operate off-road and become victim to breakdowns (suspension, drive train, chassis, etc....) due to that weight. Have you ever seen the repair bills on the 4wd Lenco Bear and Bear Cat armored vehicles when they're taken where they're not designed to go even though they're 4wd?

Unfortunately, no gov't agency cares much about repair cost...lol.
