1GR Supercharger Belt Wear

Those of you who have the new 1GR TRD supercharger, keep and eye on your SC belt, I'm changing mine today after only a few months of use, its got some really bad cracks in it. I'm hoping is just a bad belt or from SC break in, but I figured I would put the word out.

Interesting.

What is the consequence of losing the belt, say, on the trail somewhere?

Is it easily replaced on the trail?

Will it damage anything on the engine if the belt breaks?

Can you limp home without it?

I don't not have any answers to those questions, but I will be taking a spare belt to Baja with me.

Mind you I take quit a few spares parts with me.

I'm not sure if it will run without the belt, I don't think losing a belt would cause any damage unless the fan sucked it up, but I use an electric fan for mine so I don't work about it.

I've got a new URD pulley on order for a bit more boost. I've heard that TRD pulleys can be hard on belts, and URD's are much nicer on belt and no slipping.

It's shouldn't take too much time to fix on the trail, its pretty easy to get to.

Well after a couple hours work, removing the fan shroud and SC pulley assembly (3 bolts) the SC belt came off and the new belt went on without a hitch. You could defiantly do this on the trail if you had to carrying a good socket set.

I used a new AC Delco belt PT # 5K705 / 88932636 which was a much better quality belt than the Dayco belt that came off the truck.

It would go allot faster if I did it again, now I know what to do. The hardest part for some of you with the rotating fan would be getting the bolts off the fan to take the fan off the water pump, after that it would be easy. My electric fan is bolted to the shroud and comes off in one assembly.

If you wondering about the electric fan conversion, here's where I got it from.

I've now modified it a bit to use a new Flex-a-lite 480 dual blade fan that is mounted much closer to the rad. I did this to help out with cooling the new heat exchanger for the SC. No trouble yet and installed a handy switch in the cab to shut it off for water crossing.

Its a great conversion and frees up a bit of HP.

Could it be the cold caused the belt to wear out? Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye on it. Any chance you took a pic of the worn belt? Need to visual help to know what to look for.

I found lots of deep crack in the ribs of the belt and a glazed look on the sides and the back. It very well could have been the cold, but I've not seen a belt wear out so fast, it really looks like it has about 50K kms on it. The belt's really hard too, instead of being little bit soft. The belts got 10K kms on it

A few pics.

Hopefully you can see what I mean, its hard to get a good close up of the belt.

Got it, those cracks looks bad. Even my 90k miles timing belt looks better than that. I'll keep an eye on mine.

just make sure when you do as belt replace that you use the AC delco belt above, WAY better quality in belt than what came off.
