1st GEN 22RE Exhaust Manifold leak: HELP

SO... This truck has been ROCK solid, BUT I seem to "loose" the special locking bolt or stud on the exhaust manifold RIGHT near the fire-wall. This doesn't really effect the truck so much as it makes it sound like an old clapped out Chevy. Exhaust leaks drive me nuts althgough it IS sounding much like the bush trucks I loved so much in Australia... Still, I WANT to fix this and be done with it.

SO Question: ANy folks out there experience this, and is there any reason I SHOULDN'T put some damn Lock-Tite on the thing and hope for the best??? IS there any KNOWN cure for this out there in Toyota world??? Cause I haven't come across it in ALOT of reading now...

I know it's not anything BUT this stud wich is kind of hard to get at when the engine's hot. I checked over my whole exhaust system from the muffler up to the down pipe off he exhaust Manifold. Th OTHER thing is I could SWEAR that the other night when I had the GF sit and rev the enginer to find the noise, I thought I saw a small flame burst right near the fire wall behind the heat shield. this was with an "agressive" poke at the throtle so I don't know if this means I blew the gasket out as well...

Another question: Is there a good HEARTY exhaust manifold gasket, like maybe a coper unit that'll be resistant to this kind of failure???

Of note, it only makes the sputtering noise when under load. It WILL NOT make a noise when coasting against the compression of the engine or when @ minimum throttle say going down a hill. It get's REAL loud as I try to go UP a hill though...
ALSO this has happened some 3 times now in the last 2 years... Once the shop I had repair my heads re-did it for me becasue they had changed the stud and it was lost within a few miles of driving it off. I JUST replaced the Clutch, Clutch MC, Preassure Plate and Fork etc. but I didn't touch the exhaust system...

I haven't experienced this problem with the 22re's ive owned, ill consider myself lucky. I would suggest that you call engnbldr and ask them. You are really close and they have lots of experience.

Good call though, thanks for reminding me, I'll call them. I've got a GREAT shop right down the street from my house and this JUST KEEPS HAPPENING ARGHHHHH it's not really a problem as I can still drive it'sd just... Exhaust leaks are SO annoying eh. the sound is driving into my brain and I can't imagine it's any joy to listen to for folks on the street eh...

I haven't experienced any real problems with mine. When I first got the header on (LC Eng) my nuts all loosened up over a few weeks and had to be retorqued. I also had one back near the firewall loosen again and fall off. Re placed with a new OEM nut and no problems since. I have the gasket that came with the LCE header which I believe is OEM and it has been fine.

A couple items I have heard good things about are Remflex Gaskets and ARP exhaust studs. I can't find the ARPs specifically for Toys but again LCE has a stud kit that they are claiming a better clamping effect than OEM. Might give you something to work through.

1) new OEM nuts if you don't already have 'em
2) LCE or ARP (if you can find 'em) studs
3) the thicker, crushable Remflex gasket if your current one is in fact broken

Thanks man... I KNEW that my fellow Toyota folks would come through and help out. That stuff is exactly what I'm looking for. The "crushable" gasket espescialy. I DO have the OEM stud/nut on there (or I DID...) but that's been the problem, it's just kept falling off. Like I said it doesn't take the truck down but AHHHHH I hate exhaust leaks. Oh well, I'm looking at those links now and I'll have it sorted b y the end of the week (just in time to get out to IDAHO!!!!! OH HOW I need this trip - Lowman/Payette river valley HERE I COME... Oh and Stanley/Bitterroots/Salomn water shed too!!!!!!!!)

I hate to say it (pssst don't tell the 4Runner) but I'm gonna drop in and check on a 5spd Discovery I... I know in my heart that I want to import a 75-Troopy but I really like the looks and some other things about the Disco too. Just a LITTLE worried about how it'll hold up compared to owning an old Toyota as a benchmark... I'm not holding out too m uch hope for the Rover I think a 75-series is just my dream rig and I'll NEVER be happy with anythig else... except my 4Runner (that's another "dream rig" I finnaly got to cross off my list)

I love my 4Runner and the Motor and EVERYTHING BUT my exhaust is working PERFECTLY. SO, I may just bite the bullet and have my shop throw in the missing bolt and a new gasket (althgough I WILL be demading that they put on some Lock-Tite - don't care, I'm just gonna do it, maybe some blue not red) and be done with it. I have SO much work to do this week I really can't do it myself plus they can get all manner of parts in a day where as I can only order and wait... NOT gonna work... Gotta get this fixed before I drive 1000miles and go wheeling/camping where an exhaust leak anit gonna cut it. I WOULD however kinda fit in with alot of the old trucks out in Lowman (wondering how much snow I'll see...) a clapped out old Toyota is kinda De Rigeur for that area... I LOVE Idaho.

the threads amy be boogered on that stud. aluminum head with a steel stud its easy to do. especially back against the firewall where its hard to get at.

mine striped over time. i ended up heli coiling the studs and it was fine after that. be careful of the torque spec on those. its not much.

I will do that mate. I try to get out to Idaho and Montana whenever I can eh. I LOVE Idaho. Next to Oregon it's like 2nd home to me eh. I'll look ya up if I get to Boise, usualy we go through then head north to Lowman and Stanley. What is it 22 that heds up through there??? I always forget the road numbers, but I know them by sight now eh... LOVE IDAHO so much. The Rivers there are like a dream come true to a River Rat like me. plus the Hot Springs and the country is just SO nice to be in when you live in the city (I'm NOT a city boy anymore, Australia beat that out of me for good... I feel cooped up every day now since I've been back... I need to move out into the country to be happy and worst part is I'm stuck for at least another 2 years eh)

That's a GREAT point Java... I think I was trying to convince myself that wasn't the issue, but I've had the stud and what not replaced several times and I'd hope one of these time SOMEONE would notice that oh well, gotta get her looked at and maybe even get this fixed for free since the shop that did it last is really good and usualy gives me in informal warranty on these kinds of little things. Hell I just bought several hundred dollars in parts from them to fix my clutch... Hopefully Brian will realize this is the SAME THING they fixed for me not long ago...

I've always liked the stock 'Yota exh manifold gasket best, but if you can get another with the spark plug heat shields then it may be worth a try. Take the nut off and give the manifold stud a wiggle, if it moves at all you may be looking at a heli-coil repair. If you don't want to helicoil it try a small dab of JBweld on the threads (not a full on coating) - it'll make removal in the future a tad more difficult, but not impossible. Otherwise, you'll be fine with locktite.

I generally don't advocate putting anything on a gasket except in very specific cases. Copper spray is great for head gaskets and can also be used on the exh manifold - helps stick the gasket in place and fill any minor voids that may contribute to gasket failure. From the manifold back I don't even use gaskets, just red RTV (which you can also use a thin coat on the exh manifold if you want, get the "sensor safe" type)

Thanks man... I'm tearing it apart tonight. I'll see what I fond, but all signs point to a lost nut or stud AND a gasket failure. I was looking at the coper spray (and I think that or the crushable gasket would reall help) yesterday but wanted a 2nd opinion. Fingers crossed this is simple... AND I get it fixed before I get on the road. With the impending weather we decided to cut our idaho run short so we'll head out for a weekend then come back (not what I wanted to do but hey.)

Had I known yesterday when I was running around Portland looking at houses & jobs, I would have dropped off the can of copper spray that I have. If you can't find copper spray, I swear by red RTV on the exhaust and have been using it for years - just a thin coat smeared around with your finger, enough to give the gasket a bit of color to the inside sealing edge and not much more.

I've got a soft spot in my heart for Eugene (my 104 y/o grandma lived there from 45-98years old my dad grew up there - clearly DUH - and I spent ALOT of time there as a kid.) my Grandma lived - and we still have a HUGE piece of property next to her old house off of Sylvan Rd. You'd know it, it's on the other side of Hendricks Park and it USED to be the roughest road in the northern hemi... it was BAD, but it was fun to try out my first Full-sus Mt. Bike on eh. HAHAHA Anyway, if you move to Portland that'll be awesome.

We're just keeping our options open. The wife likes Portland because it has the whole "city life" thing (though we wouldn't be living in the city anyway). We both like Eugene because it seems more laid back and maybe a bit cleaner, I also dig that there's less rush hour traffic down here. One of the benefits of living in an RV is that "home is where you park it" (that, and as a gear head, I find it amusing that my home has 6 tires and a V10 :ylsmoke. Just gotta see how the whole job thing shakes out.

This brings up a point, Dave, are you reusing the OEM nuts? They are locking nuts and one time use only. They will never stay tight if you reuse them since the locking thread sorta straightens.

FWIW, I run an LC header and factory gasket, studs and nuts. Haven't loosened up going on 5 years now.
