1st gen 4 runner storage totes.

went to lowes today and picked up 2 rubbermaid brand under-bed storage containers. 43"x19.5"x6.7". they have 4 wheels on the bottom of them and the lid opens from each end. 2 of them fit side by side between the wheel wells in the back of my 89 like they were made for it. just enough room on each side to throw a ratchet strap across the top and use the factory tie downs. i'm gonna run them for a while and then i'll bring this post back up with an update.

BTW, $18 a piece at lowes. that was in store, in central wv. just thought i would pass it along.

I will have to look for those tomorrow. I just bought a pre made sleeping platform for a 1st gen. Its hard to describe how it was made, but when I get my 4runner up and running, I will post pics of it.

Just a word of warning, my experience with these is that they get very shatter-prone when cold (below freezing). Mostly they hold up in the truck, but be careful moving them onto hard surfaces (pavement).

Also, don't be surprised when the wheels break off. Doesn't seem to impair function much--they slide just fine without the wheels.

Edited to add: Sterilite also makes a version--which are even more shatter prone.

i'll try to get some pics this weekend. i

i never thouhgt abotu the cold. i guess i'll find out this winter! i ended up putting alot of stuff in these and they are both pretty heavy. i dpn't really get in and out of them very much so maybe they'll last a while. i figured for under $40 i'd give them a shot.

I bought 2 rubbermaid ones (sans wheels) at the local target for the right side & 4 smaller 1/2 sized units to go on the left side under my sleeping/storage platform.:smiley_drive:

thats basically what i'm going toend up with. i'm going to put a platform on top of the totes for a cooler, dog, .... will take some pics tomorrow

If that's what you're going for and if you already have spots on the floor where you can attach it to, consider attaching the platform the way I did supporting the platform with the wheel wells, and 3" Schedule 40 PVC pipes cut to the right length (Front and rear) and turnbuckles and long machine screws. Quick, easy and simple. Much quicker than making some fancy mount system. Hasn't failed me yet.

the way the wheel wells and the back seat are i would not have any where to put the 2 front legs in a set up like that. i think i'm goin to go off the factory roll bar some how. don't really have that par tfigured out yet. i do like the idea of the pvc for weight savings though. thanks for the idea.

they are shatter prone no matter what temperature. and those wheels will last about 2 weeks. they work awesome for underbed storage, but i dont see them lasting inside any vehicle for long.
