From my experience the 2000 - 2006 Tundra Access Cab Tundra trucks do great with a camper on them and seem to have a better payload than the newer Tacoma's.
We have a 2002 Tundra Access cab in the shop we have been beating on for the last 9 years, and we just can't kill it.
The 2005 - 2011 Tacoma's are sweet trucks (the owner of FWC just bought a new 2011 Tacoma), but the rear suspension is wimpy.
For a few years they had a TSB (toyota service bulletin) for the new Tacoma's because they had really soft rear springs.

I kinda like the "metal" truck bed too that the Tundra has, instead of the plastic bed the new Tacoma's have.
Just my preference I guess.
The older Tacoma's (2004 and older) are sweet too !
