1st or 2nd Gen

Ha ha ha I know right, I might keep the PW and just get something else. If I went 2nd gen Tundra I would sell the PW and build up the tundra.
I am curious about those rangers as well.
The PW is a beast. When I test drove it, I knew it was big but you dont realize how big until you trying to turn it around on a trail. It is down right scary. What a great truck!

I never had my PW on any super tight trails but I could imagine it would take a few three-point or even seven-point turn arounds at times haha. I miss mine, well I miss having dual lockers, straight axles, the bed and camper, the V8 power, and 37's. I don't miss the fuel economy (or lack thereof), lower build quality, or jumping up into it multiples times a day. I'll find my way back into a truck in the next few years when the 4Runner is finally paid off, but for now I sit back and watch what happens with this segment over the next 12-24 months, there's some exciting stuff coming out.

it is for all those reasons, I started to think back to a few of my favorite trucks.
The 1st gen tacoma and the few months that I did have the 1st gen tundra

I went from a 2004 Tacoma to my 2007 tundra. I would recommend the tundra whole heartedly. There’s no getting around the fact that tacos are small. I feel like there’s more room in my regular cab tundra than there was in the access cab Tacoma. The tundra is also quiet and comfortable. Especially on long highway drives. Just set the cruise to 75 and hang out.

Narrowed to the 1st or 2nd gen tundra

Need to be all in around 20-25k. That needs to include a solid vehicle that can drive all over the west and to mexico. Front Bumper, winch, suspension, tires , a shell if the truck does not come with it.

I think this is very doable.

I'm thinking 1st gen with the main question being if it's possible to find one with low enough miles and not much rust for much cheaper than a 2nd gen.

Agreed. 2nd Gen with the list of accessories in that price range might be hard to find. However, some mildly built 2nd gens pop up from time to time and sometimes for a reasonable price. If you are willing to wait I would look around until you find either a very clean 1st Gen, or semi-built 2nd gen that has been cared for.

Unless you’re looking for something smaller, you’ll probably hate going from a PW to a first gen.

I just jumped up from a 2nd gen taco to a 2nd Tundra. We looked at 1st Gen Tundras but over the course of two months we didn't see a single access cab that wasn't beat. One cool thing about the second gen access cabs is the back window rolls down. Major points for the dog breath in the back seat. So far the mpgs have been the same as my 05,08, and 09 taco but it's only been a month. We got a zero rust, single owner, 100k miles, with service all records, and a tow package. Even after buying 33" tires, 17" wheels, 2.5" coilovers, UCAs, 2.0 resi rear shocks, and some other odds and ends we are under 23k even with registration fees/taxes.

I still have the Tacoma. I haven't had time to list it yet. After driving the Tundra I don't really like it which is a big surprise. Even in downtown Denver. Drive a bunch of stuff then decide.

I think the second Gen it is.
Every Time I look for a 1st gen, they are either beat to hell or pristine but getting sold for 17-20k.
There a bunch of 2nd gen's out there with 80-140k in the 15-20k range.
I can do the suspension myself. I will have to pay for the bumper install, I dont want to do any cutting.
Eventually I will add a locker.

A couple questions
is there any year that to stay away from?
Do all 4x4 2nd gens come with LSD? Are they usually 17"0r 18" wheels?
Any suspension advice for the 2nd gen's. Icon, OME?
