Hello all, am new to the forum and have a question for anyone that has a 2.7L man. trans with 33x10.5 size tires. What gears are you running? I have a 98' extra cab tacoma 2.7L man tran. I have searched and searched, and can't seem to figure out if I should go 4.88 or 5.29. Never driven in a vehicle with either so I don't know how much gear either have to offer. Some say to go with 5.29 others say 4.88. I really would like to hear from personal experience or if there are already threads on this specific situation(probably are) then point me in the right direction. Any info would be much appreciated, I only want to do the gear swap once! ($) Want to be sure to research it and do it right.

22RE (2.4) MT, 34x10.5, running 4.88s. I get a little sluggish at the top of 10,000' mountain passes, but otherwise, it's perfect. The speedometer's right on target too.

I have a 22re and when I bought my truck it had 33s and 4.88s. I live in a very hilly area and it was a great combination. It felt pretty peppy but still had decent milage when I went down to the flatlands. I occarionally had to shift down into 3rd but most hills I could pull in 4th when empty. I have since stepped up to 35s and now spend quite a bit of time in 3rd (even after jumping up to 5.29s) I have not tried my 5.29s with 33s but I suspect it would be great in the hills but have fairly high revs and lower milage on the flats. The terrain you drive in may have some impact on what you want to buy (the hillier the terrain the lower the gears you can live with) but I would definitely suggest the 4.88s with 33s.

with the 2.7 if you do alot of highway driving get the 4.88's and youll be happy. if you wheel alot go with the 5.29's. in reality its only about 200 more rpms on the freeway. if you have any doubt at all that ur gunna go taller get the 5.29's now.

I have a 2.7 MT and run 5.29's and with 285's it's spot on. With an MT I suggest you consider 4.88 to run 33's.
