2 days in Big Sur, Ca

The gf and I took a short trip down Hwy 1 to big Sir for a camping trip. It was her first camping trip, so I made it pretty short because I want to eventually start going a few times a year so had to break her in.

It was also my first time using the truck bed tent. It is definitely convenient, but the ventilation is poor, so there was a lot of condensation in the morning. Luckily, I bought it used for a cheap price and it also came with a air mattress for the back. I think I will save up for something nicer, the foldout style possibly.

Anyways, so the plan was to leave really early, enjoy the drive down 1 set up early and do some hiking. What actually happened was we go bad directions from my wonderful Garmin, so we spent a hour or so looking for a decent camping spot. I didn't mind, cuz there are some really great EASY trails off Los Burros road right off 1 so I had fun.

After we unloaded and set up, the gf was more interested in cooking and just hanging out. We played some scrabble, cards enjoyed the view before the fog rolled in. By that time it was cold enough to start a fire, and start to prepare an early dinner.

Birds eye view of camp before fog came in

Small portion of the trail to the camp site. The road is quite long, there is also private party scattered through out.. so you just have to look for the signs. Some great easy driving in here.

So the best way to learn who makes the best gear, is to try stuff out..

Here is some of the basic stuff I have, some great some not so great.

The burner I thought was one of those "there all the same" deals and bought what was on sale. WRONG. Coleman is so worth 50-60 bux when this 30 one had a faulty igniter after its 2nd use. The drip coffee make is awesome, pre-ground my coffee before we left and some #2 filters, very portable. The water container is great too. You cant see the coleman cooler, but its awesome. I thought it was a bit crazy to say it keeps ice frozen for up to 5 days, but there not lying. They are dope!

So as trendy as it is to "be green" now a days, I try to be as clean as possible, leave as little trace behind as we can. So we had this method of washing our hands, and dishes in the bucket, then pouring the waste water in gallon containers. 2 days of washing I brought home 3 gallons. Poured it down the sink vs directly on to the ground, figure it going to the water treatment plant vs directly into the soil would be better.

Up bright n early... You cant even tell how high up we are haha.

Great camp spot. I always to to camp at Big Sur but not know how/place reservation process. Can you pm me the info? Thank you.

Are you camping on a dirt road or a state park? I was just looking at the CA map as my daughter and I are driving/camping the west coast to Redondo Beach. Ton of S.P. along the coast first come first sereve.

This placce is right off Los Burros I believe. Its a left turn directly off Highway 1 right after Pfiefer State park. It is first come first serve, and was free. I was informed you no longer needed the yearly pass for Big Sur and the surrounding parks. This may not apply to the other groomed spots closer to the coast with the bathrooms etc

Los Burros Road is the starting point, there is quite a few different paths you can take up here, there are more secluded spots, as we were right off the road so we had passing cars every hour or so.. but we wanted the view of the Ocean. If you follow Los Burros ALL the way to the top there is a GREAT spot also.

No problem. Those GPS coordinates will take you to the middle of the road.. but there are plenty of other trails, camping spots.. and i saw 0 campers there.. but a few homes. So you should have plenty of choices to pick from for camping
