Cool Trip. Great to document the history. Really cool finding that wrech based on the old photograph. Bet that doesn't happen to often.

Also good to see someone else with the hi-lift on the ABR bumper's "CB mounts" Those tabs are too sturdy and perfectly spaced to be CB mounts in my opinion. :ylsmoke:

Very Cool trip report!!! Are you a part/member of any overlanding club here in Phoenix? We have a desently setup Jeep JK...but are not into the Rock Climbing scene ( other than Sedona ).

Are you a pilot yourself? I work in ATC at Sky Harbor....

Pretty much just lurk here on EXPO and have not had time to do much of that lately. We only moved back to PHX at the beginning of the year and have been busy setting up our new house. Hope to be getting out more now that it is cooling down to reasonable temperatures. I got too used to the California Costal climate the 5 years I was gone!

Great little report on very early US aviation navigation, interesting.

They were spaced approximately 10 miles apart and spanned 18,000 miles.

Wow that's quite something, and constructed in remote terrain using 20's/30's techniques.

Over here in England it would have been very different during that age, navigation by maps, instruments, lighthouses, and conurbations.

I have driven across a fair bit of the US it is vast, well, compared to the UK. Here there would have been many night time waypoints.

Are there any expo style clubs in the phx area? I know there are tons of 4x4 clubs, vjc, fj and tacoma guys among others but are there any groups just for expo stuff. I read about and learn so much interesting stuff from everyone and there are a ton of expo style peeps here; but like me, everyone seems to go with their one or two other rigs, which i completely understand...i see nothing more "organized" I think it'd be awesome for a bunch of us with our families to meet up every now and again and maybe do a few trips.

If y'all know of any groups i'd be very interested. Most of the groups i'm in are doing the usual suspects and short stints doing "known" trails. Rock climbing and .5 mph thru a canyon, while necessary at times, really has no appeal to me. I do love the aspect of exploring, camping and learning about history and relaxing.

This was a great write up and would've loved to have just come along as a pack mule. Simply being out in the desert / woods tends to be enough, add history and it's a no brainer.

Thanks for posting.

Not that I know of, but have been out of the area for a few years, and not had time to do much since I have been back. You should regularly check the Four Corners Forum here:

Or post up there if you want to organize a trip. I hope to be doing a few exploring trips in the near future and will announce then there. My problem is I usually do not know I am going until the day before!
