I have the Detours Tailbone and it's awesome! Unfortunately I don't think they are building them anymore. All in all, I think the best option for spare tire storage, as far as functionality and convenience, on any XJ is a swing out off the rear bumper.
I also have the Detours Tailbone. I would also agree that it is awesome! Here is what they look like, on mine.

I had a 75 c3, loved it. Killed me to sell it. Any who, i have not heard of a Tailbone specificaly breaking. I have been on 3 seperate trail rides where a rear tire carrier that is in single sheer have snapped off at the the division line where it stems from the lower bumper assy. Given, these were 35" + tires on steel wheels and going over woops. I just dont trust anything in single sheer. When i put the Smitty on my xj i will let you know how it is in the long term. Being that my heep is 22 years old, with almost 300k on the clock, i dont expect anything to line up easliy. Im not looking forward to control arm drop brackets.

I like the detours set up and the mount to the body is excelent. I will try and post some pics of the bumpers that i have built that similarly tie in to the nut rail and rear mounts. I agree that you must spread the load over as wide a print as possible. Picking up or replacing the nut rails and the 8 extra bolts plus the center mount is great. I did not go completely into the instructions but i see that they do pick up quite a bit. I like the JCR, they are a solid build, made in the usa quality and damn good looks, but 1200$ for a bumper and tire carrier? ouch, smitty might not be as slick but its only 749$ complete with all the mounts for cans and hi lift.

Yeah, JCR is pricey. Overall I am happy with the Detours Tailbone...other than the fact I wish I had picked up the tilted tire option. Mark talked me out of it due to a possible wait time, well he leaned me in the non-tilted direction that is. It is only looks not function and mine is working good.

I did modify mine, it stiffened up the tire (less wobble on the whoops and washboard) but it was mostly to add the ability to mount a gas can on it.

Nice to have some accessible gas for those longer trips in this thirsty pig.

looks good... so many options.. a little concerned about heading down one road, and wanting to get back to another. I appreciate the info on the frame stiffeners... i was looking at much of this and then my Heater Core went bad... I really don't have the skills to deal with all the electrical... so now i have to pay for it.. Merry Christmas to me.. I get heat...

As has been mentioned, JCR is a bit pricey, but it's all but unheard of to hear complaints about their products. Have you seen their new Vanguard rear bumper and optional Adventure Tire Carrier that they came out with just a few weeks ago? Now that is one nice looking setup! When you look at the price, consider that you get free shipping, which could cost as much as $150 elsewhere. They also use their "bomb proof" spindle, and the included Rotopax and Hi-Lift mounts, and adjustable height spare mount make it a pretty attractive option. The Rotopax nicely fill in the gap that most other carriers leave between the spare mount and the hatch for a tighter overall look.

I just ordered mine. Until Friday they include free LED lights for the bottom portion and a free Hi-lift jack for the upper portion.
