Thanks to all for the assistance. I will get pics once we get her up and running (currently at my buddy's shop). I had a feeling there were some differences in the years as I found a ton of 2000 and older transmissions. so the hunt is on!:)

do yourself a favor and contact IPT transmissions - they build bullet proof trannies - you wont be disappointed.

Even with the transmission issue that is a really cool buy. Are you keeping the jeep?

hi Phil,
I had someone come buy the jeep. they had seen it am my friend's shop and bought it on the spot. I was hoping to hold onto it until the 4runner was completed but they were afraid i was going to sell to someone else and made me a really good offer.

Cool deal all around then.

I claim to be no expert, but I've learned a lot about our 01-02 4runners over the years.
If you have any troubles or questions feel free to PM me and I'll try to help.

Check out Rancho Toyota in rancho cordova california. They are a salvage yard with amazing prices and great service from my experiences.

155,000 on my 4runner with 4.88's, arb's and a LOT of added weight and a ton of off highway miles. Still going strong on the same tranny, so far. :ylsmoke:

I'm in the same boat but with less miles on my '01 (~90K). It concerns me that there are issues out there but there's not a whole lot you can do unless it happens. I just keep up on the fluid changes and monitor how my transmission is working.

Copy that. I worried as the miles racked up and then I finally forgot about it. So far so good. I'll keep Rancho Toyota's salvage yard on speed dial. They are the ones who got me a new center diff lock electronic actuator when mine took a dump so I hope they are as quick with trannies if I ever need one.

Soaz,
thanks for their info. I e-mailed them this morning. I did find one out of a low mileage 2000 limited though, so that might be the way I go soon. already started the tear down on the truck so I am hoping to get it completed as soon as possible.

follow up - found a used tranny with the transfer case from a 2002 that just came into the local salvage yard. they are dropping it off tomorrow. 80,000 miles on it but it seems that finding an 01-02 tranny is very difficult. once i drop the bad one i will keep it and have it rebuilt to have as a spare, along with the transfer case.
