2001 XJ A/C Problem - Not blowing cold

Alright here's what is going on.
I have an 2001 XJ and the a/c isn't blowing cold on it at all..
I've had it in the shop for a week or so now and they can't seem to find out whats going on with it.
First time I took it to the shop they recharged the freon and then we discovered it had a blown o-ring which caused a leak of freon... blah, fixed the o-ring no more leak and recharged the freon.. now it's not blowing cool again.. Now I have a question... Does the clutch on the compressor constantly rotate while the A/C is on bull blast.. because it will run for about 3-4 seconds.. shut off and then come back on in about 3-4 seconds.. I'm just trying to see if anyone has had experience with this type of issue.. So I don't end up 500 dollars in the whole for nothing..
Thanks guys!

The compressor should spin when cycling the a/c. Sounds like your clutch is going or gone, the magnetic clutch gets week and slips.

I recently had the same problem. I took it to an AC shop and had it back quick, cost about $300 and now works great. AZTACO

your system either has to much pressure or not enough freeon

i just had the same problem going on with my ZJ.

i bought two large bottles of recharge with sealer and oil from walmart. i turned the cans upside down and refilled the system on the low side of the system. i had to jump the pressure sensor on the low-side to get the compressor to turn on and cycle. once i did that the compressor sucked in the recharge kits and now it runs like it is supposed to.

As stated earlier sounds like the system is under pressure. Get it to a shop that knows what they are doing. I just replaced the evaporator on my XJ it was slowly leaking down and is a common problem.

Assuming there are no leaks and the pressure levels are fine, this is what I had happen to mine (found info on NAXJA).

Behind the clutch there is a shim that is placed in to get the correct tolerance when everything is new. Over time the clutch wears and this tolerance gets to wide (mine "stopped" working about 100,000 miles). I removed this shim and put everything back together. Took about 30 minutes total. After that, the A/C has been working great, the coldest of all our vehicles.

Again, this is assuming everything else is work but if you are getting the normal cycling, this might be the issue. I am not sure what the correct cycle rate is but an A/C shop should know. Might be something to look at.

Good luck.

We recently did the AC on my brothers 2000 XJ because it wasn't working... we found that the problem on his was the spacing on the AC clutch. There's some shims inside the clutch and they were too thick to allow the magnets to properly pull the clutch in. We just removed a couple shims and cleaned the clutch up and now it works just like new again. I'm sure it's just a temporary fix and that his clutch will need to be replaced in the future but it kept his AC going all summer so far.
