In the pictures, in that mounted to a long bed? Could it be in a short bed of the same truck?

Yes it is mounted in a long bed. It can work in a short bed as well with the tailgate down. The guy that had it before me had it in a short bed.

Short beds with that access hole to crank down an underbed mounted spare tire can be blocked by a tailgate that is down and has a camper preventing it from being raised. Also the tailgate being down can hinder a trailer but easily fixed by getting an extended hitch tongue.
