I normally start out stock (until I get disgusted with the less than great off road performance)... usually only 1 or 2 difficult trails.
The first mod is frame mounted tow hooks front and rear.
Then, like warpath4x4, I put on some decent, medium width, usually medium traction mud tires (because mud tires usually provide me with better traction on most terrains including the street) usually BFGs with around a 12.50 section width, around a 10 " tread with. and 32" (or greater diameter (33s mean the vehicle will (likely) need some body mods/butchery so I try to run the largest size that does not require desecration....Normally I look at the axles at this time, keeping my wheeling preferences in mind and decide whether they are strong enough or need to be replaced when the lockers & gears are installed.
I try to keep the vehicle as low as practical (often a 2 or 2.5" lift); I prefer mushy shocks (the minimum to allow the suspension to be critically damped) since the vehicle will not be abused at high speeds high pressure shocks are not necessary, for me.
BTW; I believe that AEV stopped selling the TJ highline fenders some years ago; I think some hood variants are still available.
Enjoy!
