The biggest problem with diesels in America is that Americans associate "diesel engine" with either the early '80s VW rabbit, or the 6.2L diesel that GM used in the 80's. Both are noisy, black smoke spewing, dogs. The average American associates gasoline engines with power and low emissions (relative to diesels). but, if you look around at stoplights....you will see diesel's in more and more pickups. People are starting to realize that 350 horsepower, 600 ft/lbs of torque, and 20 mpg can all be had from the same engine. Diesels will become more and more popular as manufacturers find ways to put existing (emissions legal) oil burners into vehicles. I believe we will see a diesel wrangler in a couple of years. With the change to the v-6 in the wrangler (the same v-6 that is used in the liberty), it is one big step closer to the CRD Wrangler. Too bad the Liberty CRD's are so noisy and gutless....they need to advance the timing a couple degrees, and give it a touch more fuel and some additional boost.....

I think the Libby has a 3.7, and the new Wrangler is getting a 3.8 that is used in Pacifica - or something like that. Not sure how much different it is.

I heard that they were using the same v-6. From a production stand point, it doesn't make sense to use different engines which have such similar performance attributes.......hmmmmmm

I too am hoping for a nice production diesel from Toyota by the time I am ready to retire my Tacoma.

Back to the new Jeep, I haven't read all of the specs yet, but visually - I LIKE IT! It is the best looking body styling yet IMO. Very nice. I really like the grill design with the slight tilt from fore to aft and the painted recesses for the round lights. Regarding the plastic fenders, as long as they are bendable, I think it's a great feature. It can save body damage and still look okay after getting smashed. And as has been mentioned, is easily replaced. I like that 3 piece top too. Very cool.

I have been spouting off at the mouth for the last year that they were going to use the same 3.7 V6 from the Liberty, Durango, and Dakota (which has similar hp and torque numbers) and now they go and use this other one:sport_box

Who the hell do they think they are?

I'm glad they built some real axles for the Rubicon, that is sweet. Sorry to see the MTR's go in favor of BFG MT's.

I believe the fenders are very ugly but that is why we all have saws:Wow1:

I bet the modular roof is rated for 2 loads of bird poo. Cool feature but how does the roof rack work with that?

I too will anxiously await the 4door version.

The 3.8L engine they are using is the one from their minivans. Same 4 speed auto transmission as well. There are rumors on ROF, RubiconOwnersForum.com that there may be a new 4.0L six in the works but we'll have to see.
