2007 & Newer Tundras

Hey Everyone,
I am new to the Forum (in fact this is my first post). I have been reading it a few days though. A little bit about me, I live in the Nashville area, own a couple of small business (a publishing company & and an adventure/camping/survival/tactical gear store) and I am heavily interested in the outdoors.

I have been telling my wife for a long time that if we could afford it, my dream would be to buy an Expedition vehicle, and travel around the Americas seeing the sights.

Now, enough about me, onto my question. Has anyone here setup one of the new generation Tundras as an expedition vehicle? I ask because I have a 2007 and I absolutely love it. I have taken it from Michigan to Florida, Maryland to Missourri. (And most states in between - I haven't even had it a year yet!) Here is a picture of my AWT (Awesome White Tundra) from July, we were on US-129 going through Deal's Gap (also known as the Tail of the Dragon).

In any case, I hope to see some awesome things done to other Tundras. I have lots of upgrades in mind for mine but little money so I'll be doing some here or there as I can afford it.
Thanks,
Jason Gatliff

Welcome to ExPo.

I think the Tundra would make a great full-size expedition vehicle. There is one running around town here that has a small lift and looks very capable. A lift, a Four Wheel Camper on the back and maybe an ARB front bumper to help with approach angle, and you would have a really good start.

Overland Journal had one for testing at one point, I do not remember what issue it was in.

I agree, I think a Tundra would make a great Expedition vehicle. The 5.7 has plenty of power and they are laid out nicely.

I am not planning on turning this into an expedition vehicle, but I plan on making a few changes to it to make it a little more off-road capable and comfortable for the campings trips that my wife & I take.

Planned upgrades:

Replacement bumpers (front & rear) from Kennesaw Mountain Accessories
Wheel to Wheel nerf bars or rock sliders
fender flares
new wheels and new tires
fog lights & auxilery lighting
skid plates

I don't think I am going to lift it, thinking about an airbag kit so I can raise or lower it if need be. I do a lot of driving on the Interstate and a lot of hauling so I don't want to make any changes that will make it less functional in that aspect.

If you ever plan to take the truck off-road over any difficult terrain (the kind that requires the other types of upgrades you mentioned, like bumpers, skids, etc), you'll probably want sliders instead of nerf bars. Nerf bars will crumple with very little upward load placed on them, as they're designed to support small amounts of weight, and only in the downward direction (i.e. people standing on them). I've seen pictures where they folded up and damaged the rocker panel and door on a truck, which ended up making the damage worse than if they hadn't been there. Just my .02

My intention is to get rock sliders but I need to find the right ones. I appreciate your advice though!

I have an 07 Crewmax 5.7L 4x4 limited and am planning on getting into some expeditions (planning on 8-10 weeks in AK this summer). I'll be adding a RTT, rock sliders, winch, roof basket (over snugtop shell) and some skid plates. I've added a storage platform that replaces the back seat and a storage system in the bed of the truck. I've had the truck about 16 months and have over 44,xxx miles on it. The truck has even sat for several weeks, at Road Armor (that reminds me they owe me a bumper) and while I was out of the country. I've driven cross country a few times and couldn't be happier in any other vehicle. Good luck with your travels in the the Tundra:)

Sounds like a great build up on a rig that doesn't get much coverage on this board. Post some pics when you get time.

Yes please post some pics! I think we should keep this thread going as the new Tundra certainly deserves credit. What an awesome beast of a truck it is!

That's a nice truck. I am also planning to stick with the 18" wheels, but I want to see what are the biggest tires I can get on my 18" wheels without a lift.

I am also hoping to put TRD wheels (or at least something beefier than what I have). I do not have a TRD Tundra. But some fog lights, wheels, skid plates & stickers and I will, LOL!

Welcome to the forum! Nice Tundra. I think this will make an excellent platform for all kinds of outdoor activities! Looking forward to the buildup!

welcome to a fellow Nashvillian, I'm waiting for my wife to tire of her Sequoia to build it up some. I miss the FJ80 I had.
