Howdy all,
We now have a bit over 30,000 miles on our 2007 Nissan Xterra OR and I thought I'd update my initial review and 10,000 mile update that I posted a few years back. Ours is a 4x4 with the 6 speed manual transmission.
Uses: My wife daily drives the X to work and it is our main vehicle for skiing, camping, and exploring Utah and the surrounding states. It fits our family (2 adults 2 kids) and our gear for both short and extended trips (roof rack with a Thule bag). Good storage areas for recovery gear under the rear seats and the false floor of the cargo area free up a lot of room for camping gear.
Fuel economy: Still averaging around 17 mpg in town and right at 20 mpg on the highway driving 75-80 mph. We recently upgraded the P-rated stock Rugged Trails to the 8 ply Goodyear Silent Armor which is a bit heavier tire but this hasn't seemed to affect the fuel economy.
Reliability: Still no major problems. A few little nitpicky things like a loose button on the stereo and a sticky seatbelt release but the dealer took care of these issues. The strange faint squeal from the clutch that we had early on seems to have vanished. There is a slight whine from something in the engine compartment (belt? pulley?) that I can hear but of course the service techs can't. Overall has been very reliable.
Performance: The X has handled our northern Utah winters with ease. Especially after getting the Silent Armor tires. The stock Rugged Trails really are junk. The traction control really does do its job on snow packed and icy roads, though we drive fairly conservatively in those conditions.
The rear locker is definitely worth its weight in gold when in deep snow.
The X still handles gravel and dirt roads with aplomb. It does tend to get a little squirrely on washboard at speed but that is to be expected.
The power of the 4.0 V6 combined with the 6 speed manual still brings a smile to my face when I drop a gear and punch it. The X is just plain fun to drive!
All in all we are very pleased with the X and haven't regretted our purchase. Only a JK with a better engine or a 4 runner with a manual tranny would make me think of straying from the Xterra
