I don't know if I read it on here or another board but I think that some people are swapping out diffs or other parts from the titan onto the xterras / frontiers.
Any insights into whether the Frontier Nismo mirrors the deficiencies (weak diffs, weak skid plate, weak Bilsteins, etc.) found in the X-Terra Off-road?
I think stock Bilsteins work very well. I have read the X bottoms out in the rear (spring under).
The diff. does not crack.. The inpot shaft of the axle brakes off. This is rare.
People are put in Titan diff for the larger ring gear and the larger axles. If you do the a full swap (contol arms) you well also gain 14" of wheel travel.
Yeah it may be weak but the one on Stormy has taken a serious beating from time to time. My big complaint with it is the blasted threads have stripped out where it mounts! All but two that is. Been that way for about three years and still taking a beating.
We have 16k on our 2006 Xterra and no issues yet. Of course only minimal wheeling. I've heard of some issues with the clutch and the diffs, front and rear. I'm sure it has happened and there may be some weakness. Seems like the new spider gears have helped with the rear diff. But I also feel that a lot of it has to do with driving style. Especially with the front diff. I think the key is to minimize wheel spin when the wheels are turned at full lock and to watch out for spinning tires coming down hard on the rocks. Keep the tires on the ground and use an smooth steady throttle. I also remember people complaining that the Toyota 100 series cruisers has a weak front diff but you still see tons of them on the trail. Just my opinion. Now watch me bust a diff on the way to work tomorrow!!:xxrotflma
Back shopping for a Driver for the wife and the X is of interest.
I'm kind of disappointed to hear about the gearing but back when I had my 92 truck I had the same complaints. 1st was not nearly low enough.
Toyota does the same sharing on the transmission as well so don't think it is only a Nissan deal. The W56 in my 4Runner is nearly identical to the W58 that was in my non turbo Supra. The only difference being the tail housing to accept the transfer case. Same gear ratio's.
Now Toyota does put in some deep gears. 4.88 was a factory gear in some models.
