2008 Expedition Problem

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum and came here hoping someone can help me diagnose a problem that just surfaced on my 2008 Expedition.
My mechanic doesn't seem to know what the problem is. He called a friend at a Ford Service location and he can't come up with an answer either.
The vehicle has 82,000 miles and has run great since I purchased it. This is my second Expedition. I gave my daughter the previous one (2002) and it is still running strong at 145,000 miles.

The problem surfaced just after Thanksgiving. My wife was stopped at a light and the car started making a noise coming from the engine and felt like the engine was rocking from side to side. She put the car in park, gave it a little gas and the problem stopped. That same day, the same thing happened again.
She came home, told me about it and I took it to the mechanic to see if he could find what the problem could be.

He recommended we service the transmission with new fluid. We did that and the car ran fine for the next six weeks or so.
She had a similar problem pulling out of a parking space at a Shop Rite. The car starting making noises and the engine started rocking. She put in park and gave it a little gas and the problem went away.

I started using the car more often and it happened to me. Same thing. Noise coming from the engine compartment (lifters/valves) and the engine rocking.
The problem goes away by putting the car in park or neutral and give it a little gas. It has happened approximately seven times in the last two months.
The mechanic tells me that it looks like the car is loosing oil pressure but doesn't know what to do about it since it only happens once in a while.

Has anyone one dealt with a similar problem?

Your help would be greatly appreciated. My wife and I are both retired and like to take long trips to Florida from New Jersey. We are a little worried about making the next trip.

Thank you, Lou G.

What motor? 5.4 v8?

If so, Id have the ignition system checked out first.

Starting with a good inspection of the spark plugs, and a full test on the ignition coils.

What you are describing to me sounds like a "miss"

I really doubt it has anything to do with the trans.

Thank you. I will have that checked. Didn't think of it.
I agree that it is not the trans. The mechanic thinks it is loosing oil pressure.
It only happens at low rpm. Maybe that has something to do with it.
It is a V8.

A friend just went through something similar on his Expedition- turned out to be a broken spark plug tip causing intermittent "miss". New plugs fixed it (after $800 at another shop that failed to fix it).

I've had a similar issue when the vehicle was under a small load with low RPM, like first starting off from a light, (light foot) or if it gets into OverDrive too early 40mph= it would shake like the tranny was dramatically slipping. It ended up being a failing spark plug wire.

Having a 2nd gen Expedition myself, I would agree with the ignition system. The engine has 8 coils, coil-on-plug set-up, which is known to fail within the first 100K. Plus, a coil that is going bad can lead to spark plug damage, I don't understand that, but that's what they told me when I had a bad coil and two bad plugs. It's been about 1-1/2 years since I had it fixed, working great still.

Thank you so much. We have been so worried that we had a big bill coming up.
I hope it is what you have suggested. I will have the coil, plugs and plug wires checked in the next couple of days and will let you know how it turned out.

I just thought of something. If it is a plug, wire or coil, shouldn't that problem throw a code?
I don't have any check engine lights.

Mine was acting up and making bad noises for 4 or 5 months before it threw a code. As a function of coil-on-plug, there are NO plug wires. (just 8 coils and 8 plugs) After reading about people breaking off plugs inside the heads, I let the dealer take care of changing all the parts. I hear the plugs are almost 12" down into the heads, probably more like 8-9", but they look DEEP...

As a ford heavy line tech id like to say yes those plugs ARE a Pita! Haha but reading what you've posted and the fact that you have no codes I do not think you have a copy problem. These engines 3v 5.4l have issues with variable valve cam phasers that will cause a simular to what you've described concern. But that being said you'd get codes for timing. I would have a ford dealer pull codes wih an "IDS" and go from there. With no codes you'll be shooting in the dark. There are also transmission issues that can cause this(tft).
