The build was finished December 2020 and has taken us on 15k amazing miles over and through the West Coast. Unfortunately, life changes have forced us to move on from our nomadic adventure rig. Taking inspiration from Earthroamers and Global X vehicles, the goal was a simple, easy to maintain and affordable truck that could be used in multiple ways. The balance of comfort and capability was right for us, but may not match everyone's preferences. With 4x4 and 37” M/T tires we have tackled many challenging trails, but it is not a rock crawler. At nearly 12,000 lbs and 92” wide it has limits and cannot tackle very narrow trails or loose sand that some off road vehicles can. The 60sq ft of heated camper space has felt like a sanctuary during the harshest weather in remote locations, but it isn’t a class c motor home. There isn’t a bathroom, the shower is outside and the climb up to bed is not for the elderly. The rear “deck” has been an amazing place to spend warm evenings, getting ski gear on, getting muddy gear off and carrying dirt bikes. It also gives the truck versatility beyond a normal camper. When not on a trip, the truck can still be used as a truck, helping friends move and making dump runs, the compromise being reduced interior living space.

The truck started life as a dumper bed, with a commercial XL cab. To start the build the dumper was removed, the engine was replaced with a new remanufactured engine to eliminate reliability concerns, a new flat bed was mounted and the dually to super single conversion was done. The shell of the camper is a 2x2” aluminum frame with foamular insulation core, weighing in at just under 1000lb. The “mechanical room” of the camper is located on the drivers side with easy access to the 200ah battery, diesel heater and propane tank. Freeze proof water lines and tank are plumbed into the mechanical room and mounted low on the frame. 55 cu. Ft. of storage, including a long pass through section are mounted on the passenger side. The deck is sealed Ipe wood and covered with 400 watts of solar panels.

Very sad to part ways with a vehicle that has felt like part of the family, taking us to amazing locations and seemingly loving every minute of our journeys. Super cool rig! I unfortunately had first had experience with the 6.4, so I’m not surprised to see it had to be replaced at 95k miles, did you do any “bulletproofing” to the new motor?

Yes, Ford updated the piston design on the remanufactured engines they are selling now to eliminate the previous issue.
