2008 Mitsubishi FG140 4m50 delete

Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster.

I recently found and purchased a 2008 Mitsubishi FG140 in very good condition and very low miles, very happy with what I ended up with. I plan on removing the dump body and building it up from the chassis.

Once built this truck is gonna spend its entire life off road and I wanted to delete/ block off the EGR and delete the DPF for improved reliability amongst many other reasons.

If anybody could point me in the right direction in how to do this the right way along with what direction I would have to go to tune/ reprogram the ECM I would really appreciate the help.

I have seen a post or 2 in the past about a block off plate for the EGR but would just like to reopen the topic in a more current time.

Thanks to all for any feedback!

In Australia there are now many people that have the skills to do a remap on the 4M50 engine's ECU, which is one thing that has definitely changed since I posted last about blocking off the EGR.
Something to bear in mind if thinking about doing an ECU remap is that once this has been done dealers may no longer want to help you with engine issues. Only the person that did the remap can really work on engine issues from that point onwards. This may not be a concern for you, but it could potentially be problematic if you have issues in more remote locations. Having said that, these 4.9L engines are pretty reliable, unlike the newer 3.0L engine.

Personally, I added a Steinbauer power module to my own truck, and I still do not regret that choice. If there were to be engine issues, I can simply turn the Steinbauer off and it is back to being a standard engine. Granted, with a remap you can get significantly more power and torque out of the 4M50 engine, but nothing that you do with this engine will make it a speed daemon. If you were planning on upping the size of the tyres to 40's, then a remap would definitely be a worthwhile option, as that would give you back some low end crawling capabilities. Speaking of tyre sizes... I still think that a 35" tyre is the optimal size for this model truck, as it lowers the revs when on the highway but does not take too much away from low range.

A power chip may not be the best option for everyone, but it is a simple upgrade. Add that to blocking off the EGR (which is very simple) and you have a half decent engine upgrade.
As I see it, given that the Fuso is not as prolific in the US, finding a reputable person to do a remap would be your biggest challenge.

Thank you for your input, it goes a long way.

In terms of repairs, I would like to believe I am capable enough to handle most things just shy of not actually having the actual parts on hand at the time of a breakdown being my biggest concern. I have been a part of some pretty large rebuilds, many heads removed, top and bottom ends apart and back together injector swaps etc.

In terms of a power tune, I am open to it. Firstly I would like to get this thing somewhat built and running more reliably, then consider if at the end, tires and lifts/ tune are necessary.

Are there any companies you would recommend for the ECU remap? Feel free to PM me if you would rather keep names confidential.

The EGR block off and ECU remap make sense to me. Any info you can spare about a proper DPF delete? I see having undercarriage clearance issues with that already as a minimum amongst the other horrors a DPF has to offer

Thanks again!

Yes, truck has a DPF but does not have an SCR so no DEF needed so I guess that's a good thing.

2007 was a split year with DPFs and 2008 onward was all DPFs I was told by my local dealer.

I would like to note that I am located in North America.

I guess that having a DPF, which my 2010 Australian FG84 does not have (equivalent model), would be a valid reason for getting an ECU remap.
Given that I have not gone down this path personally, I am not in a position to give any recommendations of who could do a remap for you.
But... as I mentioned previously, I don't know how easy this would be for you to get done in the US, given that the 4x4 Fuso is not as prolific there.

Sending the ECU to Australia might be an option, but this could be problematic if the tune needs "tweaking" for your truck.
There is a possibility that someone could do the remap remotely, as I believe that this is a valid option also.

Getting onto some of the Australian Facebook groups could possibly be helpful in finding someone willing to work with you.
I do believe that there are some reputable remappers in Western Australia, but again, I have no personal experience with them.

Bear in mind... as much as the FG140 and the FG84 are basically the same truck, there are very obvious country specific differences.
Someone that has done remaps on the Australian FG84 may not have seen, or worked on, an ECU that is programmed for a US FG140.
Having said that, they may have international contacts and be able to advise you where in the US you might be able to get this done.

You might try these guys. I think they work with a crew in Europe. You don’t have to send your ECU anywhere as they work with your files after download.
