2008 Xterra Off Road Slow Build

I finally bought the vehicle I have been wanting for a few years - a Nissan Xterra Off Road. I found a 2008 via Carmax and jumped on it. It was so new to their inventory when I found it that they didn't even have pictures of it up yet, but it was silver (I didn't want a dark color), was the Off Road trim, and had a trailer hitch. I called them up and had them transfer it to my closest Carmax. I just picked up it yesterday.

As it turned out it had the bluetooth handsfree connection kit as well. I was pleasantly surprised by that since I wasn't expecting it. Another nice surprise was that the hitch it had was none other than a Shrockworks rear bumper! The shackles are under the cargo area. Shrockworks claims that the normal spare tire location can hold up to a 33" tire so I'm not worried about it not being the tire carrier version. Right now it has the stock size 265/75R16s which convert to 31.6 inches - plenty for my non-rock crawling intentions.

I call this my slow build because I'm working part time and going back to school (trying to get into medical school next year). The first thing I ordered was some ProClips mounts and holders for my iPhone and my Sirius Sportster 4. The order was just put in today so I should have the stuff by the end of next week. Next up will be some better floor mats. It only has the carpet ones right now. I'm looking at WeatherTech, Husky, or the factory ones unless someone knows of a better option out there. I'll probably order those later next week. I already have a Yakima Load Warrior so I'll be mounting that next weekend most likely. Soon to follow will be a mount for a shovel, axe, and high lift jack - I will probably mount those to the Load Warrior. I'm looking at the End of the Road Quick Fist as an option there, but open to other recommendations. It only came with two cargo area tie down points. Any where to get those, or just get them from the dealer? Also, I imagine the little pointy ends point up, right?

Future mods will include Shrockworks rock sliders and winch bumper with a winch to follow later on as well. No plans to lift it at this time, but who knows what the future brings. Right now I'm happy with the current height for exploring and camping. It is already higher than my old vehicles for the dogs to jump into and I want it to continue to fit in my garage. I also want to get some Wet Okole seat covers. Also on my "to buy" list is a National Luna PPP and a fridge. I like the idea and portability of the PPP as opposed to a hard wired second battery. Eventually I will want either an on board air set up or just a tank. Maybe one day I will get an AT Oasis or Tentrax trailer as well.

Here are the pictures of the X and the bumper right now. I'll post new pics next week of the ProClips and Yakima when I get them installed.

Congratulations on a great find. I am also the proud owner of a 08 OR Xterra. Best vehicle I have ever owned.

I registered it today and ran a few errands. I picked up a 30' recovery strap, 20' jumper cables, a hitch insert with a 2" ball, and I hit the Nissan dealer for some more of the tie down points for the cargo area. They didn't have any in stock, but they ordered some along with the all weather floor mats and seat covers. If I like their mats and neoprene seat covers I will just get those instead of aftermarket ones.

Awesome score mate... All that PLUS a Schrock bumper!!!!!!!!!! I'm guessing that the Carmax people had NO idea what it was or you'd have paid a huge mark-up for that little piece of "special equipment" eh... Well congrats on the new rig mate, can't wait to see your build progress. The more of us on this baord the stronger and more diverse it get's. I love this place. WElcome and now, go use your truck and enjoy it to your hearts content.

Cheers

Carmax is great. They are not your standard car dealer. They don't mark the cars up insanely and then you try and negotiate down. They essentially price them at or right below KBB - the price you would pay at any other dealer after the painful hour or two of haggling. As such, they don't haggle on prices, but they also don't try and price in "extras" either. But you are right, they had no idea what the bumper was.

My build will be mostly be just gearing up for camping and perhaps some longer expeditions. I can fit in my garage right now so I'm good with the stock Off Road size tires it came with. Plus I just don't plan on any rock crawling.

I will put my load warrior on this weekend, but I just received an email that my pro clips are backordered and won't be here in time for this weekend. I might need to order another pro clip for my SPOT messenger as well. I didn't think about that one when I ordered the one for the Sirius and iPhone. The Nissan dealer said the floor mats, seat covers, and extra cargo tie downs will be here on Thursday.

As soon as I'm done with taking the MCAT in just over a week I will be taking the dogs out camping/trail running for my inaugural trip with it.

Advanced coil-over kit is AWESOME!

Sports car handling on-road, and loves to fly off-road.
I'm the same SN over there on thenewx as well.

I hate to tell you this... but once you do a couple mods....
It doesnt stop :)

Yeah, I know. My list of what I want is also long enough that it will take a while to get there. After these small camping and exploring upgrades the Shrock rock sliders will be next, followed by the front bumper and winch. I know I want a Tentrax or an AT Oasis at some point. Of course, once I have one of those along with my motorcycle it may be hard to fit the X inside the garage anyway. That would be the only time I would consider doing a lift over the Off Road height. So it is really all kind of mapped out already. I'll have to do a write up of my BMW R1150GS Adventure in the bike section. The only thing I haven't upgraded on that is the exhaust! I love that bike!

When are you building that front bumper for sale? It's easy my favorite tube bumper out there.

My Nissan Xterra factory all-weather floor mats came in. I liked them and they are cheaper than Husky or WeatherTech so I went ahead and bought them. I also picked up four more cargo channel tie down points. I don't know how much use they will get since the cargo area is pretty much the designated dog area, but I want to have them just in case. Apparently Nissan doesn't make the neoprene seat covers anymore, but from what I have been reading that is a good thing. I will go with Wet Okole most likely, but not for a little while. The ProClip mounts have shipped, but just today so they won't be here until next week.

I did mount the Yakima Load Warrior today. Man, that thing is taller than I thought. When I was all done, I was really worried it might not fit in the garage. However, when all was said and done I can still get into the garage, barely, and I still have access to the little roof hatch area (which will be ideal for the snowshoes).

Next up to order will be the ShrockWorks rock sliders. I hear those are taking a while to arrive. While I wait for those I will fab up some Quick Fist holders for a shovel and a hi-lift jack. I was going to mount those to the factory rails, but the Load Warrior sticks out too far to make that work so I'll fab it to the sides of the Load Warrior. Then the brakes are on because the rest of the stuff I want gets pricey - Wet Okole seat covers, National Luna PPP, fridge, on board air, ShrockWorks front bumper and winch, Tentrax or AT Oasis ...

Anyway, here are the pictures:

Have a blast with your Xterra OR! I bought my 05 Xterra Offroad new and it has always been a pretty rare beast.

You're headed at mounting quite a bit of weight on your truck. I'd like to suggest that you look into upgrading the suspension with some heavier components early on in your plans. The OEM suspension setup is great for when the truck is lightly loaded but does not really have all that much weight carrying headroom. The rear suspension and front suspension both will bottom out too easily offroad and on road at highway speeds when you hit whoop dee do's on the interstate as a couple of examples.

To give you an example of the additional weight your truck already has on it, that Shrockworks back bumper weighs about 100 pounds versus the 10 pounds weight for the OEM stamped steel bumper it replaced. My Shrock bumper has the tire carrier, which is nice for sure. All of Shrock's gear I've looked at has very good workmanship.
