The 5.4 is a solid reliable engine probably ok to power the rig but I don't think you'd want to tow much with it. I'd def rather have it than the 6.4 diesel but the v10 probably best engine for 2009 Fords. 5.4 supposed to get 12-13 mpg in an F350 so that's pretty nice.

Those 5.4's get pretty sluggish when weighed down. Not to mention the gas mileage will probably drop well below 10mpg with the extra weight/wind resistance.

Reliable? I ain't touching nothing with a 5.4 3V. Facts are facts!

We had a 1998 5.4 f350 single cab at my old employers which I guess is a different beast. Sorry for the bad info. It was the most reliable work truck of like 5 contractor trucks we beat around the mountains with that company. I towed a skid steer from Denver to Vail with it once and it did great maybe 55 on the grades but I thought it was going to be way worse than it did.
