To answer some of the questions:

Movement- the RAM mount is very secure. Little movement due to its design. The bar I made is supported only along the axis, so the overhung weight does allow some torsional flex. Not bad al all in my hitting it with my hand. The real test will be the 130 miles of desert tracks coming up next week.

Airbag- I know it blocks the airbag. The Armand iPad will not be in place for on road travel. Only for off-road use. For on road I'll use google maps in my phone which is tucked nicely by the driver A pillar. If I'm running solo I can use the phone also with the same nav apps as the iPad. If RAM ever makes a longer arm I'll buy it and see if it allows me to mount over the center.

Backside pics. Hopefully these help

I use the ram mounts a lot to. I started years ago with them and they are solid. I want a mount like yours soon. But till then I am working off the ram suction mounts and am very impressed with them if someone wanted to have a temporary mount the can remove and is stable on and off road I would go this way. And forget about the dollar store and ebay china mounts they are junk not worth the time and money. Like I said I have ram mounts up front for a galaxy note 2 by the a plier and a note 10.1 over the center both with docks from ram and they work great I also ordered a pile of 1" balls to mount all around the jeep inside and out to mount a gopro and the phone and tablets. I also ordered some china ebay mounts for the kids tablets for the headrests to try and save money and I started to mount the first one and about ten minutes in I went back into the house and trashed them both and then went back online and ordered ram mounts.

The dash bar worked flawlessly over the course of 160 miles of off road and 300+ pavement miles. I do have to look at a better position for tablet visibility, but it can hold a gen 4 iPad (10") no problem. Pretty stable too. A lot more stable than the flexible ram mount (seat bolt attachment) that one of the others had on the trip.

Are you making fun my iPad mount?

I know, I already have plans to move it to a more stable position connected to the dash.

What's the name of that supply shop here in Tucson? I've been looking for a place like that, but haven't turned up much through the old google.
