Hello everyone! *New price is $55,000 usd, turn key ready. Got too many trucks and now a boat so I need this gone**

So I’ve decided to have a bit of a change of pace, and am going to sell my land cruiser 78 series troopcarrier that is fully kitted and turn key for long range expedition travel.
I’m selling only because I’m a little burned out from overlanding and want to transition over to sailing for a little while. So I would consider trades for aluminum centerboard sailboats in the 34’-42’ range- I don’t mind a project either ; )

Those that have followed my builds on Instagram, Facebook, or rarely here on Expedition portal know I spare no expense when building my vehicles, often going above and beyond, defiantly unique builds that are extremely functionable for overlanding and using as a daily driver.

So here are the specs on my 2012 Land cruiser 78 series asking price $70,000 usd (I've listed ways that those in north America can legally own this vehicle/for use and import at the bottom of this)

Mechanical:

Fresh $15,000 full mechanical rebuild (1HZ diesel engine)

  • New fan clutch
  • New front and rear custom-made heavier duty drive shafts and knuckles
  • New front brakes
  • Twin 90L long range tanks (both tanks good for 1300kms) that was Pre-EGR delete, I’d expect slightly more with that being done.
  • Dual engine battery’s, with National Luna dual battery charging and monitoring system

Exterior:

  • Steel front winch bumper
  • 14k winch with synthetic cable
  • Custom dual swingout rear bumper
  • Custom aluminum storage box

  • Back up camera
  • Upgraded kicker speakers behind seats
  • Full length weatherproof floor vinyl/floor covers

I know there is quite a bit more I’m missing

With the alucab top up, you can also push the bed up and it offers 6’5” interior headroom, so you can sit and stand inside with full standing headroom- it’s really nice not having to crouch when getting dressed, and you’re protected from the elements.

Current KMs: 272,000 (169k miles), all work listed above has been done within the last 10,000kms (6200 miles) and I have the original Toyota service manual with all stamps indicating dealer service along with a couple other well-known land cruiser shops

Legal Ownership/Import options for North Americans:

This is not eligible for full re-registration import into North America yet, but you can get a 1-year TIP permit if you keep it in my name with the SA title, and a police affidavit saying I’m allowing use- we would have contracts saying the buyer is in fact the legal owner. This would allow you to legally cross any border with the vehicle, from Canada to Argentina, and South Africa to Bhutan. (Lots of foreigners here in Africa travel with this affidavit system. I’m American and did it without issues from costa to Uruguay in a Defender 110 I had that I kept in a friends name)

Or you can tour with it in Africa on my registration, using the same affidavit system or you can register it in your name in cape town as well- which I can help expedite, lots of legit legal options to do there.

If you buy it and would like to keep it in Africa but want it to make money while you aren’t using it, I have a long list of individuals, and have a stupid amount of interest for renting it monthly at a rate of $3,000 per month on a NNN “break it, buy it” contact. With some offering to rent as long as 6 months at the monthly rate- which is actually cheaper than the hertz, Safari Hire, and britz rental companies that offer Land cruiser pickups with roof top tents and 1/10th the kit out as this. So you may be able to get more, I was told I really undercut other renters at that price haha

I was going to offer it as a rental, but I’d rather have the cash to start sailing life immediately- as some of you sailors may know… Sailing is the most expensive free way to travel hahaha.

I will also ask the buyer to sign a buy back policy contract (FROR) giving me the first right to buy the truck back at agreed upon price once they decide to sell. (I did this with my defender 130 as well) And I do this because finding another one is very, very hard.

For reference, current waiting time for a new 78 series ‘workmate’ troopcarrier in South Africa ‘stock standard’ is 8-12 months and will cost $70,000usd after VAT, and registration, then (easily) add another $25k-30k usd in upgrades with more waiting times added for parts- also know that 2011-2022 78 series are all the same interior and exterior wise, but ones in Australia were offered with a turbo diesel v8. So, I believe my asking price of $70,000 usd is extremely fare given today’s overland market- that asking price is also about 10-20% lower than pre 2007 78 series campers are going for on the EU market. And about $45k cheaper than an older one listed here, that is already in the US, but lacking the modern touches of being a 11’+.

Took these at 10:00am today. For height reference i’m 5’8” and don’t come close to touching the top with my arm fully extended. So what I said about 7’ headroom is incorrect, it’s about 9.5’

apologies for the messy back, I haven’t had time to clean it properly. Each clothing cubby is 2.3’x2’x1.7’. 3 dedicated for clothes, then the ones under the sink are dry food storage. I

For those that know the struggle. Being short enough to fit in a parking garage and to go though drive thru’s is a huge plus. The troopy fits in parking garages 2.2m and taller, take the spare tire off and it can go down to 2m
