Owner reached out and mentioned this Troopy is no longer for sale at present as he's decided to ship to Europe for an expedition. :) -
Interesting, Lucidless has been fairly active on this forum throughout their travels. Great to hear but sad to see such a great rig off the market.

I got temporarily banned for criticizing the price on that $70k vanlife wrangler. So I asked jack to put the notice here. But I’m going to do a big price drop, as I bought a boat.

Got a boat- massive price drop. Need that refit monies. New price $55k usd, if it doesn’t sell in the next month or two. I’ll keep it and send it to EU, where the asking price will be about 40% higher.

Hey guys please don't message me asking for ways to import it to the states, the ONLY LEGAL ways are outlined on the first page.

Hello everyone! *New price is $55,000 usd, turn key ready. Got too many trucks and now a boat so I need this gone**

So I’ve decided to have a bit of a change of pace, and am going to sell my land cruiser 78 series troopcarrier that is fully kitted and turn key for long range expedition travel.
I’m selling only because I’m a little burned out from overlanding and want to transition over to sailing for a little while. So I would consider trades for aluminum centerboard sailboats in the 34’-42’ range- I don’t mind a project either ; )

Those that have followed my builds on Instagram, Facebook, or rarely here on Expedition portal know I spare no expense when building my vehicles, often going above and beyond, defiantly unique builds that are extremely functionable for overlanding and using as a daily driver.

So here are the specs on my 2012 Land cruiser 78 series asking price $70,000 usd (I've listed ways that those in north America can legally own this vehicle/for use and import at the bottom of this)

Mechanical:

Fresh $15,000 full mechanical rebuild (1HZ diesel engine)

  • Terrain tamer heavy duty greaseable shafts front and back
  • Terrain tamer Clutch
  • Terrain tamer tranny internals
  • Terrain tamer heavy duty wheel bearings front and rear
  • Terrain tamer axle internals front and rear
  • Terrain tamer auxiliary fuel filter
  • Full OME 2” lift kit 400kg constant leaf’s rear, tuned medium for winch bumper in front
  • New HD swivel hubs
  • New manual locking hub conversion
  • EGR delete (comes with parts to re-install if exporting to eu)
  • All new belts
  • New alternator
  • New fuel pump
  • New Water pump
  • New timing belt
  • New cam belt
  • New Aircon Idol bearing
  • New clutch slave cylinder
  • New front knuckle bearings
  • New fan clutch
  • New front and rear custom-made heavier duty drive shafts and knuckles
  • New front brakes
  • Twin 90L long range tanks (both tanks good for 1300kms) that was Pre-EGR delete, I’d expect slightly more with that being done.
  • Dual engine battery’s, with National Luna dual battery charging and monitoring system

Exterior:

  • Steel front winch bumper
  • 14k winch with synthetic cable
  • Custom dual swingout rear bumper
  • Custom aluminum storage box
  • Alucab Hercules top
  • Alucab Gullwing window
  • Alucab 270 shadow awning
  • Front runner roof rack

  • Frontrunner spare tire braai grid

  • White blackout vinyl on rear and side windows
  • Smash and grab tint applied on all windows
  • UV resistant film on front windscreen
  • Exterior water tap
  • Alucab top was pulled off and re-sealed with a better stronger adhesive (3M black super) with extra gasketing material.
Interior:

  • Full custom aluminum welded interior by Alucab
  • Inside sink w/ prep area (can easily add a dometic stove/burner
  • Full length bench that duals as a second sleeping area
  • 45L Dometic 12v fridge

  • 120Ah house battery

  • 40amp charge controller
  • 4 flexi marine lights
  • Full length slide out drawer, also huge pass thru storage compartment on the other side
  • 5 large storage cabinets

  • 2 safes
  • Tons of 12v and 220v charging points
  • 50L freshwater tank w/exterior fill
  • 12v Flojet water pump
  • Custom ripstop seat covers with pockets
  • Custom ripstop dash cover
  • Alucab storage cubby (above sun visors)
  • Custom strong box center console with hidden safe
  • New 7” touchscreen apple and android car play entertainment system
  • Back up camera
  • Upgraded kicker speakers behind seats
  • Full length weatherproof floor vinyl/floor covers

I know there is quite a bit more I’m missing

With the alucab top up, you can also push the bed up and it offers 6’5” interior headroom, so you can sit and stand inside with full standing headroom- it’s really nice not having to crouch when getting dressed, and you’re protected from the elements.

Current KMs: 272,000 (169k miles), all work listed above has been done within the last 10,000kms (6200 miles) and I have the original Toyota service manual with all stamps indicating dealer service along with a couple other well-known land cruiser shops

Legal Ownership/Import options for North Americans:

This is not eligible for full re-registration import into North America yet, but you can get a 1-year TIP permit if you keep it in my name with the SA title, and a police affidavit saying I’m allowing use- we would have contracts saying the buyer is in fact the legal owner. This would allow you to legally cross any border with the vehicle, from Canada to Argentina, and South Africa to Bhutan. (Lots of foreigners here in Africa travel with this affidavit system. I’m American and did it without issues from costa to Uruguay in a Defender 110 I had that I kept in a friends name)

Or you can tour with it in Africa on my registration, using the same affidavit system or you can register it in your name in cape town as well- which I can help expedite, lots of legit legal options to do there.

If you buy it and would like to keep it in Africa but want it to make money while you aren’t using it, I have a long list of individuals, and have a stupid amount of interest for renting it monthly at a rate of $3,000 per month on a NNN “break it, buy it” contact. With some offering to rent as long as 6 months at the monthly rate- which is actually cheaper than the hertz, Safari Hire, and britz rental companies that offer Land cruiser pickups with roof top tents and 1/10th the kit out as this. So you may be able to get more, I was told I really undercut other renters at that price haha

I was going to offer it as a rental, but I’d rather have the cash to start sailing life immediately- as some of you sailors may know… Sailing is the most expensive free way to travel hahaha.

I will also ask the buyer to sign a buy back policy contract (FROR) giving me the first right to buy the truck back at agreed upon price once they decide to sell. (I did this with my defender 130 as well) And I do this because finding another one is very, very hard.

For reference, current waiting time for a new 78 series ‘workmate’ troopcarrier in South Africa ‘stock standard’ is 8-12 months and will cost $70,000usd after VAT, and registration, then (easily) add another $25k-30k usd in upgrades with more waiting times added for parts- also know that 2011-2022 78 series are all the same interior and exterior wise, but ones in Australia were offered with a turbo diesel v8. So, I believe my asking price of $70,000 usd is extremely fare given today’s overland market- that asking price is also about 10-20% lower than pre 2007 78 series campers are going for on the EU market. And about $45k cheaper than an older one listed here, that is already in the US, but lacking the modern touches of being a 11’+.

Hi There
I am brand new to this forum, so I just found this posting. I am potentially interested in this offer if it is still on the table. More details to follow once I hear back as to availability of vehicle.
Thanks
Kevin

Great, glad to hear it. Here is my situation. I live in the USA. I have done several self-guided safari trips in southern Africa over the past several years, so I have some experience with rigs and traveling the back roads of southern Africa. I am interested in buying a vehicle, and yours seems like the perfect rig, for a few extended (5-6 month) sub-Saharan Africa overland trips over the next 3-5 years. I plan to take the first trip starting around the first or second week of May 2023 in South Africa and end up in Nairobi, where I would leave the vehicle with my brother (who lives there) until I return the following year (or potentially the year after) and make another slow return trip back to South Africa (different route), where I would store the vehicle for another 6 months (or potentially 18 months), and then return for a third trip south to north (different route), ending somewhere (?), possibly Nairobi again (not sure yet). For these overlap trips I want a fully equipped rig such as yours. After I am done with these trips, my plan is to sell the vehicle. In any event, you get the gist of what I am planning.

So, I am interested in buying your vehicle but I would like to ask a few questions.

First, is there any chance of leaving the vehicle with you until I arrive in May? If not, do you have someplace you recommend that I could store it and would you be able to take it to the storage location.

Second, given the above, would you still want the first option to buy back after my trips (this would be ideal as it would save me the trouble of selling it, but I would not expect you to obligate yourself).

Third, and most importantly, as I am a non-resident of SA and will be in country on a tourist visa, registering the vehicle in my name is problematic (unless you know a way). Do you have a viable solution such as you keeping the vehicle registered in your name and giving me an affidavit authorizing me to have full control of the vehicle? I believe there is another company that does this, but it would be easiest if we kept it between us. This may be a lot to ask as you are not in the business of doing this, so not worries if you can't. In any case, I would like to hear your suggestion on the most secure way to do this. Of course, much of this depends on whether you plan to keep living in SA for the next several years. If not, I would have to think of another option.

Fourth, where is the vehicle currently located? And can it remain at that location until I arrive in May 2023?

Lastly, would you be willing to take a down payment on the vehicle soon and receive the remainder at some later date? If so, when would you want full payment. My wife is giving me a hard time about paying for a vehicle in full before I have actually taken possession, but I realize this may not be feasible for you, so let me know your thoughts on this.

Let's start there, but know that I am very serious about purchasing the vehicle.

Cheers
Kevin

Firstly, the truck is to be paid in full immediately- I will not take down payments, on this truck or any other trucks I sell this is a non-negotiable factor.

Secondly, You could leave the Troopy with me as long as you want, and I'll either keep it at the house or at my friends shop- all depends on if I'll be out of the country or not, but it'll always be stored.

Thirdly, Yes i'd want the first option to buy back

Fourth, I can make a contract for you to run on affidavits, its very easy, a guy from Spain is running off of one for my 2010 76 series I sold him 8 months ago. You just have to cover insurance (send me proof), the cost of a Carnet De Passage if require (not required, but you'll want one for Kenya so you don't sit at the border for 5 hours) etc..

Lastly, the troopy is located at my house in Simons Town, western cape- 40 min south of the Cape Town airport right by Cape Point Natl park

Also, for your personal safety and since this is an open forum, you should edit your last message and take out your full name and where you live.
