2012 International 4400 Hotshot Crew Truck for RV/Camper Conversion

After alot of searching, I found this truck a little over a year ago. I am the first civilian owner after it was decommissioned. I bought it with dreams of converting it into an Overlander/Camper as a family project and taking it on road trips. But with family and work demands, I just don’t have the time and I need the space for work equipment. I want to see it go to a good home.

Price: I’m only asking $55,000. A brand new truck (cab + chassis) like this would start at $80,000. Adding a crew compartment body, adds another $130,000, bringing it to $210,000.

You can email me at: jg6805703@gmail.com if you’re interested and I will be happy to answer any questions.

This truck is a great starting point for any DIY RV Overlander build, unlike used ambulances with high mileage, built for city use and extremely dirty (if you know what I mean). Crew trucks like these are serviced monthly (whether they need it or not) ensuring excellent condition. It was built for functionality and comfort. It is rated at 25,998 GVW so no CDL is required (verify with your state). And with the features shown below, you are 90% there:

– Legendary International DT466 engine and Allison automatic transmission

Only has 51,800 miles on it and runs great (these trucks were built to run 100,000 miles a year)!

– 8 Person Crew Seating + 2 Person Cab = 10 Person Total
– Crew Compartment Body (Access from Rear of Body, and Emergency Access Hatch from top)
– Seats are easily removed ( I have 6 seats pulled out for sleeping room )
– Body can be cut right above the tool boxes if converting to a service truck
– Air brakes, air suspension, air seats and exhaust brake

Additional specs:
– Galvannealed Steel 2″ Thick Insulated Body (R14 Insulation in Ceiling and Side Walls)
– HVAC System (Cooling 33,000 BTU, Heating 46,000 BTU)
– 8 Usable Exterior Compartments (tool boxes with lighting)
– Crew Compartment Overhead Storage & Lower Shelving for Crew Gear
– Heavy Duty Vinyl Upholstery and Retractable Seatbelts
– 2 Emergency Exit Windows
– 3 Exterior Scene Lights with Warning Light Package
– Master Disconnect Switch
– Double Panel Compartment Doors
– Stainless Steel D-Ring Handles (Lockable)
– Structural Channel Sub Frame
– Shear Plate & Spring Body Mounting
– Compartment Lighting
– Painted Steel Interior Side Walls (Body Painted to Match Cab)
– Floor coated with a rubberized coating
– Full size Spare with Storage room Under-deck
– 2 wheel chocks mounted on lower back cab
– 100 Gallon Fuel Capacity
– 4 Batteries
─ DC to AC inverter
─ Air horn

Location: Stanfield, Arizona.

Known Defects: Cosmetically only. This is a decommissioned US Forestry Truck, they took out the emergency lights, sirens, stereo/speakers in the crew cab and radios. The cabinets are scuffed/used but can be cleaned, painted, and upgraded with custom shelving. The front cab seat covers are coming un-stiched but are easily replaceable. There are a few small dings in the doors and wilderness pen-striping in the paint.

tbonebrown: I will have to get you measurements for the height and exact length of the interior (and photos), but I put a queen size RV mattress it for the kids with room to spare.

Jigidy, it is RWD. However, while I was searching for this type of vehicle (with 4WD) I found out that they are very hard to find and more expensive. Commercial companies tend to snatch them up very quickly. Then I really thought about how and where I was going to use this truck and found that for 98% of the time I wasn't going to need 4WD. With the air system powered up, it has 27 to 28 inches of clearance under the side cabinets ( front and back of the rear axle).

I will try to post some more photos tonight.

tbonebrown: To answer your question (see first attache photo):

The interior height is right at 72 inches down the center between the (airline like) overhead compartments.
The floor measurements are: 64" W x 165" L, the last 20" (of the 165") are storage compartments just inside the back door ( see last 2 photos).

Here are more photos that I wasn't able to post earlier:

First photo shows, front cab with all the cool emergency stuff removed. It is very clean but shows seat cover un-stitching on driver's seat.
Second photo shows, ground lighting under step of back door.
Next two photos show, interior crew lights, white and red. Also, there is a pass-through to the front cab, and yes that is an AC outlet on the front wall.
The fifth photo shows, ground lighting under the drivers step into door, likewise on passenger side.
Next two photos show, cabinet LED lighting. You pull the switch to light up and closing the door turns them off.
The last two photos show, crew compartments for personal items. Each one has a 12volt outlet and dual cup holders. There are 3 on each side.

This truck has many cool features that will make it a "Kick-Butt" camper conversion.

Now this is a COOL rig! I'm not in the market but hopefully this type of discussion is OK with the OP.

Is it possible to converse with the occupants in the rear box while driving down the hwy? Or better yet how feasible would it be to open up a pass-through?

Also, I've always been curious what kind of MPG these trucks get... but maybe it's a "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" type of situation :)

Yes you can talk to, pass a drink, or yell at the kids ? in the back through the cab window. It also has a zip in clear plastic window that you can take in and out ( see the third photo in the last set of photos ). You could open the pass-through up, more like a walk-through, if you are willing to put some metal work into it. Or you can cut out a walk-through and put an extended boot around the opening.

As far as MPG, depend on how you drive and where you are driving. On the highway I was getting pretty close to my F-350 ( with a 4inch lift on 37" tires), 15 to 18 MPG. You could probably push 24 with a good tail-wind ?.

Wow, that is impressive mileage... my stock E350 w/ gasser V10 gets 15 mpgs cruising on flat hwy. It will be worse once it's lifted and converted to 4x4... maybe I should sell the E350 and buy this thing!
