OP, Nice rig!
I drove to Costa Rica and back in the early 1990's with the Toyota pickup in my avatar.
...don't forget El Salvador.
We had some interesting interactions with the police/military in the mountains of Guatemala.
It was quite the adventure. We made it safely there and back to the states...the border crossings are the tough part, not to mention evading the banditos (drive during the daylight hours).
Cheers
I went to college in San Diego and we were down in baja every weekend. A friend of mine and her boyfriend were driving back to SD from Ensenada after dark. They were approaching the top of a hill that had a steep onramp on the other side when some banditos pushed a junk car down the onramp into the highway. They hit it at highway speeds. She woke up to someone taking her jewelry and purse, don't remember what happened to her BF. Luckily for them, the next car to come along was driven by some paramedics from LA. They put them in their car and got them to a hospital in SD. She lost an eye but recovered as did her BF.
Never drive down there at night. If it's not the banditos, it's the livestock that will get you.
A few years ago I was driving north of 200 through Michoacan in the daylight and came around a corner to find a sandbag gun emplacement and about 20-30 guys wearing balaclavas and carrying AK's and AR's.
Never a dull moment south of the border.
