2014 Moab trip!

Well, I just finished my second annual Moab trip and it was a blast! I took a few pics and have a sweet video of hells gate that I will post up. The following is a day by day account of my trip.

Day 1. I left San Antonio at 0700 and headed west on the 10. The first couple hundred miles were pretty uneventful. I had a good audio book and I was settled in for a long drive. I got to bakersfield Texas (in the middle of nowhere) got out to fill up and saw this!

I don't know how this happened. I can only take the blame myself as I am the one who just put everything back together as well as doing a rear axle rebuild. I guess I must have over torqued the nuts? But I lost a dowel pin and all 6 hub studs were broken off. So what did I do? I immediately got on the horn with cruiser dan in Albuquerque to see what he had in stock. He had the hub studs and all hardware, but didn't have the dowels so those would have to be ordered and Wouldn't be there until the next afternoon. So I had him order them and then I called my wife. I was very seriously contemplating turning around and just calling off the trip. She encouraged me to press on, and worst case scenario, I could spend the time in Moab just hiking instead of off-roading. So I pulled the rear drive shaft, put the front back on and headed for Albuquerque. This is my trail fix to keep the diff fluid in the diff and not coming out of the open shaft.

I found a HEB morning shake bottle in the trash and it fit perfectly. I used some RTV around the edges to keep it sealed and wedged some sticks in there to jam it in place.

I got to my hotel around 10 pm that night and went to bed.

Day 2. I woke up early and went straight to the dealership to see what they thought the damage was. Long story short, I spent about 6 hours in the waiting room while the extracted the broken studs and put the new ones in. $425 later, I was on the open road again!

On the road

Someone headed to expo?? Montana plates.

I got to Moab at about 1030 that night and got camp set up. I had intended to stop in Roswell as well as 4 corners but I didn't get on the road until after 3 pm. It sure was chilly in Moab when I finally got in!

Day 3. Very interesting morning. I woke up at about 0600 because it was so bright! I got up, showered, and got the rest of camp set up and got all my wheeling gear secured inside the cruiser.

I headed into town to get some gas and small supplies. As I was driving down the road, I passed a woman walking in the opposite direction. It took a minute for it to register in my head that she was holding her head and was covered in blood! So I hurried and turned around to see if she needed help. I pulled up to ask her from across the road if she was ok and she headed right towards me. She was probably in her mid 60's, frail build and like I said, covered in blood. She said that she had been walking and tripped on an uneven part of the sidewalk and lost her balance. She had a gash over her right eye that was about an inch long and very deep. She said that they were staying at a hotel close by, so I got out, helped her in my car and drove her to the hotel. When we got to the room her husband was shocked to see her in that condition and I relayed what she had told me. I went out to get my first aid kit and as I came back and put on my rubber gloves he asked me if I was first aid trained. I said kind of and told him that I had taken a combat life saving class before I deployed and that seemed to satisfy him. We got her cleaned and bandaged, then they took her to the emergency room. When I left I realized I had used my only pair of rubber gloves so I went straight to the store, bought a box and put two pair in each of my first aid kits. I think this good deed helped keep me safe the rest of my trip.

After I fueled up I headed to Sand Flats recreation area to drive Fins n things. This is one of my favorite trails and I think its a great warm up once you get to Moab. The rock there is so sticky and it takes some getting used to.

It was about 0930 by now and I had the place to myself!

I went back to pick up my friend and we did the trail again. He has never been off-roading and loved this experience.

to be continued....

Saw that first image and thought "Oh oh. That can't be good."

Glad to see you kept going. Looking for the rest of the TR.

Day 3 contunied

After the second time running fins n things, we were headed back to camp and went past the trail head for hells revenge. This is a trail that I have wanted to do for a long long time, but I have never had anyone to go with. I asked my friend if he wanted to do another trail and he said "sure"! We pulled into the parking lot at the base, looked at the book for a minute and then headed out. The entrance to hells revenge is a super high skinny pathway that gives you the feeling of walking on a curb. In reality you have plenty of room, but the first time up is an interesting experience.

There must have been some decent rain before I got into town because there was some "deep" water spots on the trail. The first I think is called lake Michigan? If you stay right then you can avoid most of the water. If you go in down the middle, like I did the second time, I had water up to my rocker panels.

Further down the trail was a bit more water so I had my friend jump out and snap this picture.

We continued along and got to the split off for Hells gate. This is an obstacle that I have been dreaming of doing for so long. I have seen tons of pics, and watched a dozen or so youtube videos of it, so I decided that it was a must do. Not a good idea to try this for the first time by yourself and with a "spotter" who did his first off road trail a couple hours previous... But before the gate, we made it up to a great outlook of the colorado river. It was beautiful!

After the scenic detour, we headed for the gate. To get to hells gate, you have to go down a small obstacle. Not sure if it has a name, but we got a good picture of it.

Finally we were at the base of Hells gate. Looking at it in real life is such a rush after you have seen it so many times in pictures and videos. It's pretty intimidating. And this is also where I learned one of two valuable lessons that day.

I started up the gate and was feeling pretty good. I got a little off track (stay right!) and got a bit tippy. My friend got out and "spotted" me up another ten feet or so and we got this picture.

But from here it went down hill. I got my passenger tire off the wall for some reason and became very unstable. I was giving it some gas and my front end was just getting higher and higher off the ground so I backed off. I weighed my options and decided that it was best to back down. So from that point, I had to reverse down hells gate. Not an easy task at all, and not one I want to do again. Ever. I almost learned that day, that an experienced spotter is worth their weight in gold. I will never do something like that again without some good eyes on the ground. I say almost because it took me another time that day to learn this lesson.

Defeated by the gate, we went back up to the main trail and continued on our way. The trail was a blast. Up and down slick rock, around the hot tubs, down the dragons tail and finally to the escalator. Without even getting out to scout the obstacle I went for it. I had never heard of it, never seen it and didn't even look for a bypass (which there is. This is another optional obstacle) so I figured it wouldn't be too hard. Wrong I was... I got up over the first hump and then my rear tire dropped into a water hole. It wasn't very deep, but it was deep enough to get water all over the tire and cause me to loose grip here. I kept trying and trying to get out of the hole and I was getting more and more stuck. I finally got to the point where I had wedged my rear bumper into the hole and pinned myself against the rock with my rear pillar. There was no where to go. We tried everything. This time I really learned my lesson about being over eager and off roading with a single vic. About two hours passed and it was getting dark out. I said a silent prayer that someone would come our way and kept trying to get us out of there. After another 30 minutes or so I thought I could hear vehicles. I went up on the rock and saw two early gen toyotas coming our way. They were both very built and we waived them down. They got to the base of the escalator and one guy said "poor 80 series" and then laughed. He went around the back way, hooked me up to the winch and pulled me out, all within about 5 minutes.

This picture doesn't do it justice, but this is where we were stuck.

By the time we were off the obstacle and on our way out, it was very dark. We decided to follow them out just in case. Little did I know, we went right up and over tip over challenge that night. Not an issue at all. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the recovery, or of our rescuers. We got back to camp at around 11 and both slept very hard that night.

Glad you made it out OK. I've done Hell's Gate a number of times and luckily never had a problem but never tried the very intimidating Escalator. Scares me to death thinking about having to back down Hell's Gate. Whoa Nellie!!! Did you then go back up the first half of Hell's Gate where one normally goes down?

Yes, I did have to go back up that part. That part wasn't too bad.

Nice wheeling with you on Metal Masher, Jon, too bad we didn't have a chance to chat more. You would have enjoyed Elephant Hill.

Lol, I never even considered doing Escalator in my rig. It looks like a buggy playground to me...Tipover Challenge is more my speed. I would have liked to have seen his attempt.

Yeah, that was a lot of fun! I'm bummed that I didn't do that trail, but I got the chance to redeem myself at hells gate.

Day 4 and 5

Well, day 4 was a lot of fun. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures from the trail! I went and met up with Bigswede and some other isuzu guys. We talked about our options and we decided on running metal masher. It was fun, and provided some beautiful views. The trail was mostly uneventful except for one guy who tried to drive off the ledge on the way up to widowmaker. I did not attempt rock chucker or widowmaker.

Steve, if you read this and have any pics from that trail, post them up!

After the trail, mike and I went to hike "left hand" as well as "right hand" Left hand is a easy short hike that leads up to a small water hole. There are a couple ledges that you can jump from, as long as you jump between two large rocks hidden under the water.

Day 5 was time for redemption. I met with some friends that had come down from Salt Lake, and we tackled hells revenge again.

Cell phone shot of some of the group

And then it was time. Time to tackle hells gate. Luckily this time I had an experienced spotter and after watching someone come up, I headed down to get ready for the gate. My line wasn't perfect, and I lost sight of my spotter for a second. I took a funky line up, but I made it to the top without dying.

And here is a video if one is so inclined to watch.

I did not try the escalator again, but did watch a built fj40 struggle and have to back down. Then I saw a fully built jeep commando walk right up it. After seeing the built 40 have trouble I didn't feel so bad about getting stuck.

After the trail, we went swimming and then all hung out for some great bbq and corn hole.

Last and "final" day to follow.

Nice pics and video. The comments from the photo crew were interesting - I think it looks a lot easier when you're already standing at the top.
