well the S-AWC makes it leagues better than a rav4, but it isn't going to go rock crawling no...

They're what sells. And here's why those sell and the Montero doesn't in the US...

[Soapbox On]
Pathetic piss poor marketing. Abysmal market research. Abysmal marketing campaigns. Abysmal sales results.

Mitsu really screwed up massively with the Montero.

Instead of...

A) going after the Jeep crowd
B) driving home the Montero's prowess in off road on races like Dakar
C) working with aftermarket vendors
D) bringing Ralliart here to help create an aftermarket for them,

they instead choose to market it to urbanites ("urban gorilla" was one marketing slogan I was told) who only waned to look tough but wanted a minivan ride/capability. It's a 4x4 on a boxed ladder frame. It will NEVER ride like a minivan.

So instead we get an audience who isnt interested in the Montero's strengths and instead compares the Montero to a Tahoe/explorer and decides they prefer the soccer mom comfort and buys those vehicles.

With the misguidance from their market research the went after the wrong segment. not just for their 4x4's but they duplicated that failure within their pickup line (which they really didn't sell well either).

You can say the same thing about many of the original and legendary SUVs (including the Pathfinder) or even the RWD sports cars etc but at the end of the day it's what the avg people want (sporty looks, car like feel and comfort, ease of use). Avg people are far > than us enthusiasts. Afterall, the car companies are businesses- sales and gross margins is what matters

To answer the original question though, while I don't own an Outlander or a RAV4, they will take you down most dirt trails, fireroads and more. I've seen Subarus and even a Honda Element once (with AT tires) where I was feeling pretty proud of my truck and about being 'out in the middle of nowhere' :)

I couldn't agree with off-roader any more. mitsubishi dropped the ball a long time ago, and I have no hope for their recovery or that they will stay in the states at all. Even the mitsubishi dealer in Roseville CA has pretty much stopped selling mitsu all they do now is just parts and service. But I still think as far as the outlander as long as your not trying to do any crazy technical offroading I don't see why it couldn't be good.

Note: I read my comments above about it being a glorified Rav4 and realized some might think I'm putting down the mitsu. I'm not. I'm saying its a beefed up version of that class of suv's. certainly not as capable as the Montero or Montero Sport, but capable enough for probably what most people who would buy a 4x4 would want to use it for.

I'm also saying they could have done a far better job attracting Jeep buyers who wanted an even more rugged look and vehicle capability even though as owners they'd probably never ever take it off road for fear of scratching the paint.

its too bad. If they had done that, we'd probably still have the Montero here today.

i do speak regularly with a friend who used to work as a design engineer at mitsu r&d in cypress, ca and he fully agrees with that assessment of their marketing teams stupidity when it came to understanding the American market/buyers.

in fact when it was originally suggested to have the first MOD (Mitsu Owners Day) back in 08 (or was it 09? dont remember exactly), their marketing team wanted nothing to do with it whatsoever. They expected it to utterly fail because they felt mitsu customers wouldn't be interested in going. Its grown each year with aftermarket suppliers there now. In fact just a couple of years later they now have MOD's at both the Normal IL and Camden NJ plants. That really illustrates just how clueless their marketing teams are.

Actually, I believe the first MOD was in 2005. Pretty sure that was the only time I ever saw any Monteros there, too. It's since turned into 500 Evos "hard parking," and everyone else feels a little left out. Still, those are the folks buying new Mitsus these days, those are their enthusiast customers. The rest of us, with our $2000 projects assembled with aftermarket parts aren't.

I'd also offer that the Chicken Tax keeps MMC's award winning trucks from competing in North America. Only reason we get the Tacoma and Titan here is probably because theyre built here. "The most dependable, longest lasting trucks" outside the US are not Big 3.

If you were at the first one then you saw mine, & Carlos' (cap510) rigs. I don't recall who else went. Yes it's definitely turned into an evo-fest although the starquests and gt3000's are also well represented.

the reason people weren't buying new Montero's and building them up as 4x4's is because they were never really marketed as 4x4's... Just boring people carriers. I'm sure every new Jeep buyer dreams of off roading their vehicles and some may even take them off road but the majority (98%) won't until the warranty & lease/loan has run out or if they do only on dirt roads and not hard core technical terrain. Once the least/loan is done though? Out come the upgrade and dirt here we come!!

Also, its the Marketing that creates a perception for the customer of what they can do with their rides.

In Mitsu's case... Pathetic, road driving. No mention of winning the most Dakar trophies, working in harsh 3rd world conditions with no roads for the vehicles entire life, etc.

In Jeep's case, outstanding... So good that they can up charge for a vehicle with far inferior ride comfort and until the Rubicon, far inferior components (Dana 35's and 33" tires off road?!? Really?? Good luck with that!!).

None of us had a rtt that I recall. The 2nd or 3rd year we had one with a rtt. I want to say we may have climbed onto a spare tires with one of the rigs but it was so long ago I can't really remember.

As I mentioned I was approached by a guy who was an engineer in their US r&d team (Brent W) who wanted their marketing team to focus more on mitsu's trucks so he went with us on a couple of trips and video'd us on the trail and interviewd us to create a promo video. The video was well received buy their team even garnering the interest of the team in Japan and we met with one of them at the 2nd or 3rd MOD as well as an editor from a mitsu car enthusiast Magazine. In the end though it was already too late for the Montero in the US and that Magazine folded.

Brian no longer works at Mitsu. He's now at Cadillac LOL...
