I have 2017 250 with 4” fox dcs coil overs, on board air, rear air bags, motorized bed cover( currently in search of better solution), Thule roof rack. I am ordering rogue front and rear bumpers with winch capabilities. I have a family of five so the days of hardcore overlanding have passed. But I do like a truck that can be prepared for almost anything. Looking to add some type of bed rack, the problem is I do tow a gooseneck from time to time. I also want to add some type of canopy. I would love a tent but that’s not really in the cards with a family of five. Any suggestions or help would be nice. Thanks

You want to add the canopy to the side of the truck for when you are camping? How removable does your bed rack have to be?

Sounds like a soft top bed cover is what you need.

Easily removed or folded down for hauling or loading but provides a weather proof shell when deployed.

Look at the Leitner Rack- not 2 minutes but not 2 hours. I would think it would do the trick unless hauling the gooseneck regularly- but anything other than the retractable soft topper will be the same. The big advantage to the Leitner is the movable rear loadbar- it slides forward to allow access of taller items like a motorcycle or such. I have the Decked drawer system, so my height was severely limited with the ARE cap. Worth a look/see, but will depend on your tolerance of time to convert from gooseneck to rack...

Your need for the use of a Gooseneck really limits your options here. You'll be converting/disassembling things when you need to tow regardless if you go beyond your current setup. Put the gooseneck needs aside and by far my favorite setup I have run is the AT Habitat. It gives you a camper shell with side window access, a huge tent large enough for your family of five if you use the Goose Gear fill-plates to extend the floor or you can set up some cots in the bed below. This obviously wont allow you access to your gooseneck hitch without removing it, which isn't difficult, but that would involve a hoist or forklift to make short work of it or a few strong friends.

Yes I would like to use the canopy for camping. I would say removal would have to be fairly easy. I do have access to a forklift if that makes a difference.

The only other option that I can think of, besides a soft topper from best top, would be the Thule Trac Rac. It’s movable so it will work with a gooseneck. Then I’d add an iKamper tent. It will fit 2 adults and three kids as it’s a little bigger than a king bed.

How many times a year would you need to tow? If you've got a forklift and a place to store the topper, it'd be pretty easy. Just get a hi-rise topper from Leer/ARE/etc. Leitner racks are cool, but no covering for camping. Softtopper is an option but no security.

Well I just talked to the Dave at overland up, great guy. I got the Yakima hd bars they work with the pace Edwards tonneau cover. Also ordered a peregrine 270 awning. I am going to try this and see how I like it. If I hate it I’ll try the nuthouse stuff or a complete topper.

I was going to say that but I've already been accused of being a shill for them. I have it and I love it. The original version is available in the 8 foot bed, and the newer version is available in the 6.5 and 5.5 ft beds. If you have extra stuff mounted to it like I do it will take 2 or 3 hours to remove it but yeah, its not at all intrusive like some rack mounts are. You do have drill 4 holes, but they come with nutserts that can be left in no problem.
