2019 Power Wagon Build

Alright Gents. I figured I would start a build page. Last time I did one was when I did a solid axle swap on 37"s on my 1993 Ford Explorer when I was 17.

Two years ago I bought a Gen2 Ford Raptor with the intentions of having a daily commuter that was pretty ************ and could take off road and fit the family of 4 comfortably. At about 30,000 miles I had multiple engine warranty problems and decided to return the truck. A good friend of mine put me onto the power wagon so I did some research and decided to buy one. So here we start.

My intention is still somewhat the same. I have two young children that I want to start introducing to camping. Also before I spend a lot of time or money building a sweet trailer I decided to build a rack and run a RTT to make sure we as a family will enjoy camping. I own an electrical sign shop which has a full aluminum fabrication capabilities. With that we have a lot of drop/scrap aluminum that I pile up and then use to build parts.

The Power Wagon comes pretty stacked off the production line. Until there is some significant tire size increases I don't feel that it is necessary to do anything to the drive train. Full lockers, winch and sway bar disconnects. 33" tires. I'll run these until its time to replace them then its time too look to 40"s.

I just finished building the frame for my rack and purchased a used RTT here on the classifieds. I had never TIG welded before. I know how to Stick and MIG weld so I used this rack as a project to teach myself how to run the TIG welder. Other than that I will update as the truck progresses.

How have you liked the PW compared to the Raptor?
Well... he returned the Raptor due to engine issues soooo.... lol

I'm curious to hear what the issues were. I thought the EcoBoosts were supposed to be pretty good.

I don’t think there is a comparison between the two, they are both in a class of their own. Both are designed for separate purposes.

Considering my next truck will be a new Power Wagon, Raptor, Ram Rebel TRX, or Ford Super Duty Tremor I disagree. I’ll be comparing all four before I buy one.

You can do and compare what you like, however the raptor and power wagon are both in a class of their own. The tremor is like the new at4 package gm offers. The power wagon is a dedicated off road truck, which is the only one out there with a front locker, winch, soft suspension and disconnecting sway bar, not really the same as a raptor, tremor or trx... get what I’m saying.

you can compare and see what works for you, but they are mostly very differnt trucks.

I don’t disagree that they are all different, it that’s why I’ll compare them. When I bought my Power Wagon I looked at everything Ford, Ram, and Chevy had to offer and the Power Wagon checked all the boxes. Who knows, the Power Wagon might win again, but I still want to be informed before I write a check for a new truck.

My advice would be to figure out what you do with your vehicle the majority of the time then look at vehicles that fit that.

But I think this is where the apples and oranges overlap:

I’m assuming most of us will use the truck as daily drivers. That’s what, 90% of seat time? So that automatically swings it to a half ton. But maybe at times you could use a 6.5’ bed instead of the 5.5’ bed. Especially during extended outings. So does that put the PW ahead? But the Raptor gets better MPG. But maybe you like the solid ride of a 3/4 ton. Hmm.

Wheeling: solid axles, disconnecting sways, F/R lockers would be fun. But Raptor can crawl, too, and I’m sure it would also be fun.

So, as I look at it, both trucks may have things that differentiate one from another but it’s really hard to definitively quantify if A then B, and if X then Y. They’re both tools to get you around town and the outdoors.

Raptor was literally the only other truck i was looking at (Gladiator with D60s and Hellcat 6.2 please)

SO i actually cross shopped the two, just sucks im here with my 2018 and a failed trans..
two different leagues...same end goal for a daily driver.

BUT i built my Powerwagon to beat any raptor...and it does in many ways...but not speed or fuel efficiency.
come check out the lack of body roll and the Cadillac plushness below
