235/85/16? Let's see them

My Perentie RFSV is currently fitted with 235/85/R16 Cooper Discoverers - run with tubes due to the nature of the army split rims.

They are a good substitute for the 7.50 -16 Goodyear Hi-Miler Xtra-Grip tyres these vehicles came with as standard, and aren't as noisy on the road.

If you wanted some old school “bullet proof” tyres for remote travel there’s still a couple of options available in the 235/85R16 size.

- Bridgestone Dueler A/S 661
- Toyo M55F

Also a couple of new options that have been released recently:

- BFGoodrich HD terrain (heavy duty)
- Maxxis RAZR MT772M (mine spec)
- Yokohama A/T XD G017 (extra durable)

1992 FJ80 phresh outta the junk yard. Picked it up with a blown motor @320k miles, this is the first 5 mile trip I took two days before a 2k mile road trip with the family (it was successful!)

At 35psi the 235/85R16 Cooper Discoverer AT3s measure 30.5” tall after about 20k miles. Perhaps a little small for an FJ80, although the stock tires were 235/75r15 (29 in height or thereabouts). Would recommend this tire for sure.

Next tires will likely be 33x9.50 Kenda Klever (apparently 32” height and approximately 3/4” wider tread, from research over on IH8mud). Or maybe something bigger… we’ll see.

Another D1 on 235/85R-16's. Ideal Tire Size for the Early Disco IMHO..

I had a D1 awhile back with some 215/85R16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. I miss that truck dearly. What an amazing truck, and reliable too! Would absolutely enjoy one again if given the opportunity.

Yeah, I miss my Disco too. For me it was the perfect combo (SD, White, 5 Speed Manual) and lifted/accessorized just right. Unfortunately it was on track to need its second gearbox and transfer case, thanks to a mistake by the installer of the first new set that damaged the output flange seal, allowing the transfer case gear oil to leak out more rapidly than normal, damaging both.

Though she probbably would not have left me, at the time it felt like it might have ended my marriage to put that much money in it for a SECOND time. But I still miss it none-the-less..

This used to be a super popular tire a decade ago; but I am trying to find a MT in this size for a work truck - and not many choices available.

Actually, for some reason BFG does not currently offer Mud Terrains in that size. My local dealer says “maybe” after first of the year.

BFG does offer their new HD Terrains in 235/85R-16, which looks to be sort of a Mud Terrain, but can’t find any good impartial reviews. Would love to see a side by side comparison between the Mud Terrain and HD Terrains.

Been running Mud Terrains for many years on my 93 Toyota, but my camper keeps getting heavier, so need to upgrade to 16’s to get the E rating.

In the 235/85R15 - I ended up purchasing:

Mastercraft Courser MXT

I tried to get the Milestar Patagonia M/T-02 but the the 235 was backorder with an unknown delivery date for them. I did put the M/T-02 these tires on a different truck:

Milestar Patagonia M/T-02

The Milestar tires were about $100 cheaper than the Mastercraft Tires - They are both going on 3/4Ton Flatbed work trucks, that live on the dirt.

I have been amazed by my Firestone Destination X/T, in the snow and mud especially.

I was very happy with a set I had on my Xterra, 235 80 R17

I wish they made 255 80 R17 I would consider for my Bronco
