Ok, so I'm looking at going tall and skinny with my tires. The size that I would like has a very high load rating... much higher than that of my vehicle. What do you all reckon would come about using this tire on a 4000lb (dry) vehicle.

I am also concerned about the rim width and backspacing since there isnt any info on running these size tires on the Xterra.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am also considering the same move, to swap my Navara's stock tires with Toyo Open-Country LT 235/85 R16 A/T.

Most 235/85/16 are E rated. It'll ride on the harsh side if the truck no heavy enough. Not sure how much running in lower pressure will help. I've seen these tires on F250 more than once.

I'm running that size not on my Trooper and I don't find the ride of my 235/85 E rated SNOW TIRES to be any more harsh than my WORN 285/75 D rated all terrains. Now, to explain the emphasis, snow tires are going to be softer than regular tires and old tires are harder than new tires. I'm running about 32 psi all around on the 235's and ran 32/28 (f/r) on the 285's based on a chalk test.

I have not bought summer tires for it yet, but probably will stick with 235's because I like the way they feel even though they look silly on the truck. Scott ran both 235's, 265's and 285's on his Trooper and said the 265's were the best overall blend of looks, on/off road performance. I mention all this because the Xterra and Trooper are about the same weight.

The 265, is the same height, but I'd prefer to not have a 10.5" wide tire... in hopes of getting slightly better gas mileage. (the 235/85 is lighter than the 31s that i have now)

Hey Scott, I ran 235/85/16 BFG AT's on my 02 Xterra. I had no problem whatsoever with the tires fitting. They may ride a little stiffer compared to other tires but I never noticed. I traded it in and have the same tires on my frontier now and wouldn't go back to anything else.

Sorry, can't tell you about the Exterra but I can tell you the 235's are the best tire I have ran on my Tacoma. I love the way they ride and handle on and off road. 235's will be the tire for my truck here on out, I even bought a spare just to prove it! Good luck and post some pics when you get them.

I'll be going with 235's for my 2000 Frontier. As soon as I take the winter tires off the wife's X with the 16" rims :yikes:

I have the stock 15" wheels on the rig now and am considering getting the Crager steelies. Anyone know which backspace/offset i should get?

I know the stock wheels have a 5.5" backspacing... but thats all i know. I'd like to put the tires/wheels slightly outward since I am going with a narrower tire and lifting the Xterra.

I run those size tires on my Range Rover, it has a 2" lift and I've never had any problems w/ steering or stuffing the tires under full compression. I have had good off road abilities with the slightly narrower tire and like the 85% height (good in snow too). I would also say going with 'E' load range is a smart move, stronger side wall (if you air down or when load is transfered do to off camber situations).
