2m / 70cm antenna?

Holds up pretty well. Never had an issue with it. Fire/Rescue pretty much uses them exclusively and they get beat on pretty good. Find a happy medium between performance and cost when purchasing an antenna. Would suck if you broke an antenna that costs a lot. I doubt you'd ever see a problem with the mount itself.

Suggestion would be to make sure the roof around the hole is clean and run some water soluble lube on the o-ring before you crank it down. It'll help prevent the o-ring breaking and causing a leak.

Bring on the questions!

I use the Comet SBB-1 in the woods directly in the center of my 4runner roof. Its a true rubber ducky style whip but has held up to 50w uhf/vhf. It has taken some good hits on accident but I remove it when heavey branches are going to weigh on it continuously because its not really cheap to replace. Performance wise it seems ok but obviously is not compairable to the SBB-7 I use when I can. The SBB-7 has actualy taken a couple hits and is still intact but I would imagine it would scrape off fast if left on. It can be folded 90 deg but you need to reach up and unscrew a portion so its not a super fast manouver. I have heard the coil pack styles (like the SBB-7) will break at the coil pack if abused. The SBB-5 Style (pig tail coil) seem to be a good compromise of durability and performance but ive never owned one. I like the tip on covering the coil with shrink tube.

If you use the higher quality adhesive-lined marine heat shrink, the more efficient plastic covered coils end up being even more durable that the pig-tail type. And, they are much less "snag prone".

Yeah a friend of mine has an open coil on his antenna and it got ripped out of the base because a branch got stuck in it. We straightened it back up but need to get some adhesive lined shrink tubing on it before we wheel next
