3.5L Water Temperature Gauge

My Montero has the common issue with the faulty temperature gauge. I'd like to replace the stock unit with an underdash, aftermarket gauge. Does anyone know the size and thread pitch for the sensor?

What year Montero? The 00 and on have a common issue that isn't sensor related but is a problem with the gauge circuit.

I posted a thread on it with a link to a YouTube video. Pm me if you can't find it, and I'll send it over once I'm back at a computer.

The fix is pretty easy and takes 30 mins or less.

I'm not sure of temp gauge problems in 99 and older.

Can't believe I left out the year - it's a 2002.

I would like to see the video. I'd rather fix the stock gauge than install a new one.

Also it was late. I should have set the year ranges with problems at '01 and on (gen 3)

I'll see if I can dig up the post

It was a good watch! Too bad I had already purchased a complete new OE gauge cluster to fix mine before I saw it. Good thing you have options. Good luck.

Does anyone know if the OBD II port relays temperature information?

I know I'm behind the times but I just learned that you can get a Bluetooth OBD reader that will pair with a smartphone. There are apps that will display the info as you drive.

+1 on the Ultra Gauge...takes the place of a bunch of separate gauges, is fairly inexpensive, and a cinch to install. Reads and clears trouble codes, calculates instantaneous mpg, and much more. Can't recommend it enough.

Check it out -->Link

The instructions say it only works with Android but there has to be one of these for iPhone, too.

I got a BAFX Bluetooh OBD II Reader and downloaded Tourque on an old Android phone that I'm going to be using as a dashcam.

My Montero has been with a mechanic friend for a couple of weeks. I picked it up tonight and used Torque to clear the check engine light and then to monitor my engine on the ride home. My stock temp gauge was all over the place but the app showed it staying between 181 and 186 degrees.

The placement of the OBD port puts a larger reader (like the one I linked) kind of in the way of your accelerator foot. I don't know if the small ones work or not but they would be out of the way.
