I just picked up the 2000W version at Home Depot yesterday.

They had them listed for $299.

They were advertised as 2008 models.

Since decibel sound ratings are logarithmic, realize that the circa ten decibel higher sound ratings of this generator mean that it is about ten times as loud (sound energywise) as the Honda/Yamaha equivalents. Doesn't mean it's a bad deal, just that it's considerably noisier than the notably quiet mainstream brands.

My guess is that this generator would be a fine thing for providing power for ten minutes of tool use, but that it'd be pretty intolerable for hours at a time in a campground.

I'm tempted to get the 1000w one just on the size and weight alone.

I looked for the $299.00 2000w version at Home Depot with no luck, as they are discontinued. The SKU # is 183779, if you're inclined to call around and not waste time and gas driving around. They can also tell you if any local stores have them. I know some guys bought them up for cheap and are selling them on CL.

Though 1000w won't power much, it can recharge my amateur radio station batteries.

Dang, that's a good price! They're shown at $600 on the HD website.

Yeah, I thought so as well. I went there in the morning to pick something up for work and saw the display. I thought it was a good price, but I wasn't familiar with the Honeywell brand of generators. I went back to work and looked at some reviews. Decided it was a good price and went back at lunch. I actually bought two of them. One of the guys working there said he was calling his friends telling them about the deal, but no one was interested.

BTW...I have the Honda EU2000 and a larger 5500W Generac. I don't really need these, but I figured at that price I should pick them up! Not sure the wife agrees with my thinking though! :sombrero:

It is possible to put a better muffler on a cheaper generator like these and get the sound down to the level of the Honda/Yamaha models?

How important is it to have a CARB certified unit if you don't live in California? Are there any restrictions on use of non-CARB models in California by out of state visiters?

Thanks, Vic

I think that the little Yamahas also have some felt padding inside the plastic covers to kill mechanical noise.

No cop in California will be examining your generator for CARB compliance yet but the money-hungry legislators might dream something stupid up.

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
A much as I hate 2 stroke, I scored a 1200W "Wildfire" generator the other day for... $150 brand new...
Here is an example... http://www.erniesequipment.com/cata...ortable-Gas-Camping-RV-1000/product_info.html

I do recommend 4 stroke though... And really there's nothing like a Honda...

Also, the DB rating on these is not impressive at all. Mine is 62 dB and is just barely loud enough to be annoying to the point where I'll be making an enclosure for it.

Mine is super Chinese but I figure if you're going Chinese you might as well save some money. The parts are the universal 'cheap generator' parts that seem to be available at all small engine repair places..
