So the BFG had the same failure?

Had a similar failure which I was surprised to see. You can see the bent rim on the tailgate. That was after day one. The tire failure was on day three.

Our take was the sidewall damage on day one lead to sidewall failure on Day 3 BFG has redisigned the Mud-Terrain and that is the older style tire.

The FJ seems to be hard on tires and rims. They way my friend drives does not help.. Seems like he bottoms the suspension and then the only thing left to absorb the hits are the tires and wheels.

We all use to race. I like adventure travel much better and just cruise. Also stay out of the other guys dust

My frinds not so much... Still kinda lead foots and don't mind following in the dust...This also accounts for the FJ's tire issues.

Looks like a case of too much "soda" and testosterone, and not enough careful.....I'm just sayin'. Also, going on an agressive trail ride with only 20% tread left on your tire might be begging for trouble. I'd say the tire did exceptionally well considering it sounds as though you drove on it flat for miles...

That's a pretty good assesment.

I was pushing it regards to going out with those tires. Kinda wanted to see what they would do... The spare was 80% tread.

And yes.. We went for MILES as the Trooper had two flats. Was amazing how good it handled with tires going down.. And the AT sidewall held up much better than the BFG and he went a shorter distance on his flat.

The Trooper is a Excellent off-roader/adv rig. Well balanced and only weighs 3500lbs. Does not eat the tires as the heavier rigs do....

This is how far we were from Primm when we stopped to install the spare on the shreaded tire...

The other flat we put tire sealant in and kept adding air. Seeing as how I had two going down and one spare, It was decided to go as far as we could.

Was fun..

You could just go to 33X10.50 on the same 15" rims you've got now and have nearly the same exact same tire depending on mfg. I belive that 255/85's work out to be slightly larger then 33" tall and a little under 10.50" wide. Redline has an AWESOME thread comparing tread widths in the general vehicle section. I highly suggest you look at some of his threads as well as the Sticky at the top of the General section marked "Tires".

Cheers
