That's what I run, 7" wide rims. BTW, those are not lame wheels at all, I like stock spoked steel wheels. I only got rid of my Toyota equivalents when I went to generic aluminum American Racing.
I'm running 33x10.50s on my XJ (replaced a set of 33x9.50s) wheels are 15"x7", with 4.5" backspacing. I'm very happy with the size - handle just fine on the road, do well on the trails I run. The x9.50s were okay, but the x10.50s do impart a more stable feel to the Jeep (on and off pavement) - both sets are/were BFG ATs.
I've run/wheeled 31x10.5s on 8s for a good while. It wasn't really much of an issue that I can remember running 8s. The nice thing about the 10.5s is you get a choice. Its rough on a 12.5 to run on a 7.
The other thing about the 33x10.5 vs the 33x12.5 is that its less 'square'. (I hope someone can chime in to back this up 'cause I can't remember where it came from). The 12.5 will be more likely to have a lateral imbalance (side to side). Which causes all sorts of death wobble fun on a little Jeep.
