3rd Gen Montero Roof Rack Rail Replacement

Hey Everyone,

Been searching around today, and I am trying to figure out the best way to mount a Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform to my Monty. I currently have Rhino Rack bars that clamp on my stock rails. I would like to remove the stock rails, place tracks on the roof from Rhino and mount a Pioneer Platform. Anyone ever done this? If I search their AU site they have some of it listed for the Pajero but not everything. I have an email out to them, but thought I would check here first.

Thanks,

Remove headliner, put vise grips on the nut inserts to prevent them from busting loose, and unscrew from above while someone holds the vise grips down below. Then you simply bolt your rack into the existing nut inserts, it's the same process for a lot of rigs.

Sabre and ImNoSaint have detailed write ups for the process of getting the roof rails out. I don't have the links in front of me right now, but if you check the Sticky of Montero build threads 2.0 at the top of the forum it will get you to their build threads.

The Gen3, unlike the Gen2s, doesn't have nutserts in the roof, so it isn't as difficult in that regard. No vice grips needed. Just five nuts on the underside of each rail.

And I can't for the life of me find the thread of the guy that installed the Rhino Rack RTS tracks on his Gen3. It came out good though. Fit perfect.

People do it either way...most have just used the factory rails. They're only "rated" for 100 pounds, but they've been tested by many here beyond that without issue. I don't know if the RTS tracks claim to increase your roof's payload capacity.

I personally put one of Rhino Rack's steel mesh platforms on my Gen3, directly attached to the factory rails with u-bolts. It has worked fine, and it's been loaded very liberally. I am not a fan of the cross bars because they put whatever basket or platform you choose way up in the air. I just think it looks a little goofy for my taste.

Lucky gen 3 owners, the gen 2/2.5 is a pain.

I thought the Gen 3 rails were more than that. 220 lbs sticks in my head. I'll look in my owners manual when I get a chance.
