3rd Gen Montero's --- Diff Issues

I had read some postings on another forum about 3rd gen Montero's having some issues with their diffs - wasn't sure, so I figured you guys here might be aware of the details, if there were in fact any issues.

Info?

Can you be more specific? I haven't experienced any issues. However, both of mine are completely rebuilt with OEM parts and 4.90s.

I have heard the front diff vacuum lines will leak on third gens.

Friend of mine bought a 06 3.2 last year, it had 50,000 on it. The diff would whine at over 65mph, which he didn't reach on the test drive. Luckily the dealer got it rebuilt for him under warranty

The other thing is the half shafts can slip out and I guess the fluid could leak out running the diff dry. I've not looked into it too much, but it is a problem some people have had

Some of the rear diffs could have the smaller circlip on the rear axle flanges. I believe it is usually the left one that leaks. I have not experienced it though. Mitsubishi made a parts kit to replace them. Some would eventually slide out just enough for a leak from the seal.

The hoses on the front diff for the front axle disconnect system can have issues, but it is usually the solenoids. Mine was a bad actuator however. Either part is $100 to replace. Hoses are standard vacuum hoses and just need to be checked for leaks. Search for Pajero/Montero blinking 4WD lights for information on this issue.

If you don't have signs of a leak in the rear or 4WD lights that stay blinking then there are no issues.

my driver's side rear axle came out of the diff an inch or so, caused a big leak of diff fluid in my driveway. I ended up pulling the axle from the diff, and bending the circlip ever so slightly haven't had the problem since.

But the correct fix is to replace the axle shaft that goes into the diff with the one they put into the 04 or 05 and on
