4.2 diesel questions

for those looking to swap the diesel make sure the diesel and the gas one are the same year. Also, i think pre 93 are the easier ones, i would not touch the 2001 v8, there are WAY too many electrical mixups with that. The mechanical work is easy, all the bolt holes already exist, just make sure you have the entire fuel system out of the diesel as well. when i did mine i bought a whole diesel truck as the donor. The hard part is the electrical, making it run is easy, making it work properly is the hard part. I had a engine from a 91 going into a 93 gas, the transmissions were different so it was alot of work to dumb down the electrical. I had sent it to RADD Cruisers to do the electrical work, if you are serious about the swap talk to them. Mine was the first one they had done so it will be easier for them now. swaping in a diesel is easy, its all a matter of money... it was expensive... would i do it again.. probably not.... do i love it... definately... was it worth it... yes.

I've done just that, as far as i know i'm the only one with a Diesel 100 in North Amercia,

I'm getting 22 mpg with my 100. If i only drive highway at 70mph i can run 730km with 86 liters.

You would need a complete HDJ100 with 1HD-FTE. Not only the drive train, trust me, the whole truck.

Was not easy to do but i LOVE the truck, quiet, and i'Ve almost cut in half my fuel cost. I was driving a Mitsubishi montero before.

I have a 2001 Land Cruiser with the gas v8. How difficult would it be to swap in a diesel? What motors would every one be on the look out for?

Rubiclone,

Were you able to find a wrecked truck to buy or did you have buy a runner?

I have been considering that conversion, but you can by a lot of gas for the money to buy a fully running vehicle to pull a motor out of .

Question, were you able to use the parts going back into the other truck. Is it feaseable to make a running truck again to sell? or are the parts lost in translation?

Another option and perhaps the laziest is to have someone do it all for you... I hate to admit that is what I did. I found a guy in IH8Mud (Chris) that does diesel conversions. Spoke with him and i was confident enough in him that I drove the FJ60 to his place in Portland, OR dropped it off and 3 weeks later I had a Toyota 12HT diesel FJ60. The 60 with a 12HT is a different creature than the gasser, over two years after the swap I still love turning the ignition and driving this rig.

Chris sourced the engine for me, did the swap, swapped the diffs, found me an Aussie long range fuel tank and quite a few other things and since then we have become good friends and he has helped me numerous times with unrelated questions about the truck... Chris is finishing up an 80 conversion in the next couple of weeks. Even if you don't want Chris to swap the engine for you he may be able to source one. If not try Proffits, Specter, Radd and maybe G&S

hey Ed,

I was able to find a running hdj80, but it didnt have any interior, seats, bumper, doors, or pretty much anything that isnt required to make it run.

theoretically you could make a running truck again, all the mechanical equipment was swapped over from the diesel, however the LHD electrical wiring harness is modified so you wouldnt be able to use it in the diesel you take your engine out of... if that makes sense. probably, more work than you will get out of in the end. ive seen diesel engines being sold for 10,000. i was able to get my running truck for a few grand less than that so it wasnt even worth it to make it running agian since i might end up being able to get 1,000 bucks or so for it if i ever did get it running.

awsome mileage! im sitting at about 650 for 86 liters. have you ever weighed your truck? for some reason i feel the 100 is quite a bit lighter than an 80... but i dont know if there is any truth to that. im sitting at about 6,000 lbs for my 80.

my old hdj81 would get 10.5L per 100kms driving at 100kms an hour. Good fuel economy for an awd truck with fat 33s I figure.
Its a cruiser not a race car, its not a passing vehicle. Just cruise.
And I am sure there was room for improvement if the injectors had been done among other things.
