4-Hi and 4-Lo won't engage...

Sometime in the middle of a two-week road trip through Sumatra, going through some rough surfaced roads, gravel paths and off-road tracks, my D40 Navara refused to engage 4-Hi and 4-Lo. The instrument board icon blinks and blinks and blinks, but never engages. I also managed to sever the ABS cable going to the right rear wheel. Any insights as to why 4WD won't engage? 2WD still runs strong and smooth...

That is the problem. If the system is not getting a speed reading it will not engage. Fix the sensor and that should also fix your 4wd problem.

If that doesn't fix it look up the code (the blinking light isn't just a random thing) and it'll tell you more.

Thanks. The rig is due for its 5,000km check-up so I'll take it in to the dealer shortly. Nissan should have run that severed cable behind, rather than in front, of the axle thereby reducing the chance of it catching and severing.

the funny thing is that before leaving for the trip I came across a website which brought up this issue. I said to myself "that will never happen to me, that cable can't be so vulnerable and important"...the most likely culprit was tall, stiff brush, scraping and catching on the cable...

I did miss the ABS somewhat on steep downhill gravel tracks where hard braking will make the rig slide or worse, wash out...
