4 runner and chinook

Are you picturing the larger-bodied Chinook Newport and Omega without the pop-tops? It looks like they had some wider back wheels and tires but I'm pretty sure they are still singles.

There are mentions of Toyota Chinooks on duals around the web. I wonder if they were aftermarket conversions. Still most-likely half-tons though, just with dually wheels or adapters fitted.

hard to tell from the pic, those look like one ton wheels/hubs to me. the Hubcap is covering it up.

Seems the one tons were rare??? I am not finding too much information on them.

You are correct Chinook had many variations on the Toyota chassis to include a dually with or without pop-up. .

thanks!
Yeah I sold the 4runner to one buyer, and the flip-pac to another.

I'd break down the costs and amount of time(guesstimate) of this project and then see whats out there in your budget that may suit your needs. The Flip-pac on a 4runner is doable. Durring my project I found myself spending a lot of time on the project that I could have spent camping. Then life changed a bit and I needed a 4 door vehicle that was more baby/wife friendly. HA

yeah, I rather be out exploring than wrenching on a project vehicle....though I do like to tinker as well. it is a constant tug of war in my head. ;)

life does indeed change, congrats on the baby!

Most all of the chinooks with popups do not have duallys. There was a kit available to add them but doesn't seem like many went that route. For the chinook popup there were different interior variations but the exterior was largely the same. There is also the Omega as mentioned and i believe i saw another variation but not in a pop up. I have seen at least 2 different chinooks installed on 80s era Toyotas and both owners seemed to love them. If installed and retaining much of the original you will have a lt. wt conversion. If your adding underbelly tanks, extra propane, heavier duty floor, etc. you can add weight quickly. Most of the chinooks ive seen have floor rot and you will need to replace.. NOT fun! The floor height is 1 1/4 but it is a plywood with foam inserts. Not strong enough for offroad abuse.

I haven't weighed mine yet but I believe it will be comparable to something you would purchase.

Heres my link if you would like to see what I did.

Back when I had a 1st Gen, and a couple 2nd Gen pickups, I was doing research into the frames, as well as a possible full floating dually axle swap. IIRC, the dually axle is the same as the regular axle, except for the axle shaft, spindle and hub...WHICH, IIRC, is the same axle as in the Dyna...Or was it the Hino?...(It was the medium duty truck, not the heavy...I always forget which was which).
Toyota tended to overbuild/engineer parts, and also liked to use as many common parts as possible between models. Also, IIRC, the 1 ton frames were the exact same as the regular frames. The reason the 1 ton chassis got its 1 ton rating, was not because the frame was different, but solely due to the addition of the full floating dually axle. This would tend to bear out Toyota's overbuilding/common part practice.
